onTo Fiddler's Green - Joseph Michael
Hallissy, 88, passed from among us quietly, unexpectedly,
and peacefully while at his home Tuesday. Joe is known best to racers for
his dedicated involvement in southern Bay race management. Joe and his
dear friend Clyde Winters were for years known affectionately as the "A Team"
when it came to running sailboat races. His expertise, his charm and his
Irish twinkle will long be remembered by all who knew him. Joe was
preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Katherine.

Momma Mallard gets a few hours off
- A Momma Mallard duck got a bit of a holiday
Saturday, when her nest, built in a cutty in Graham Field's
Islander 36, Independence, cockpit, went racing.
Graham reported that all went well, no eggs were damaged, and Momma Mallard met
the boat and crew as they returned to the dock. Racing Mallards - what
next?
Craig Olsen is moving up to an
Olson 34. Craig found the boat in Rochester NY,
says it has never seen salt water and has never been raced. He plans
to race in the Chesapeake Bay Distance Race Series (BBSA), but other than
that, Craig and his wife plan to use the boat for cruising. Craig
will put his current boat, Namesake, Olson 30, on the sale block and
get his racing fix by crewing on the Blais Beneteau,
Stardancer.
Water fowl help with racing
Saturday: As the Tune-Up Race finishers approached the finish
line, they were greeted by the honks of two Canada geese, who stood
exactly at the pin end on the shore of Hampton University. Could this
be a cost saving measure that will eliminate the need for air horns?
The geese maintained their position through the finish period.
Eleven (11) southern Bay
racers got the jump on their fellow racers Saturday, when they
snuck in a Tune-Up Race in Hampton Roads harbor between weather
fronts. In the tradition of Tune-Up Races, only the order of finish
(no corrected scores computed) was recorded. Nine (9) spinnaker
boats and two (2) non-spin boats raced on two separate courses. Racing
were: Feather (Phil Briggs); Spray
(Bumps Eberwine); Fins Up (Tom
Connors); Cool Change (Rusty Burshell);
Bad Habit (Bob Archer); Independence
(Graham Field); Valkyrie (Karl
Petersen); Strega (Neal Garnett); Old
School (Mitch Doughtie); Surprise (Bob
Thomas); and, Stardancer (John Blais) -
dnf. Race committee members - John McCarthy (pro), John Ritter, Dick
Boykin, Buk Lawrence, and Lin McCarthy.
MURPHY'S LAW: Yrs
Truly, the Racing Beagle, received
a packed-to-the-gunwales Easter basket Sunday morning.
And, as soon as the dentist removes the green cellophane that is wrapped around
my canines, I'll be able to smile again!! However, all of this
inconvenience is certainly worth the Godiva chocolate rabbits!
/S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us
all.
