WAIRERE, Pete
Hunter's Thompson 30 from Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, sailed
great throughout the regatta and took home the top overall award, the Gosling's
Black Seal Cup. The team in the red shirts finished
with a string of 2-1-1-1-1-2-3 over 7 races in PHRF A1 to win their
fleet, holding off hard charging, locally based Meridian 2,
Sledd Shelhorse, (Hampton, VA Beach) who won Day 3 in their
fleet by one point, but could not overcome Wairere's overall
lead.
Sea Star, Dave Eberwine's J36,
(Hampton/Suffolk) and John White's and Tom Ballard's
(Annapolis, MD) purple hull #999 Beneteau FC10 went at it hammer
and tong all three days of racing, . The two teams did a masterful job
of employing match-racing tactics within the PHRF A2
fleet, exchanging the lead throughout the event. When all was
said and done, Sea Star sailed their best in the first race of Day 3
(Race 5) to take a bullet that turned out to be the linchpin for the top spot in
PHRF A2.
In the J105 one-design fleet, Mike
Karn (Fishing Bay/Richmond) and the Inevitable team
hammered the fleet on Day 3 with 3 bullets to take the top spot from
David Clark's (Fishing Bay/Mechanicsville,
VA) Corryvreckan, who had held big dog position for the first two
days of the regatta.
In PHRF B1 one of two Tripp 26's, A
Parent Tripp, Brett Harrison and John
Yeigh from Annapolis, MD, gained the lead in the first
race (#5) of Day 3 and kept their hold on first over Dennis
Hannick, Goin' ,Tripp 26 (King George, VA), and Ben
Week's and Michele Cochran's J29, Rumble (Yorktown,
VA). Rumble had a brilliant first day (1-2-1) and
was only one point out of the lead after Day 2, but A Parent
Tripp put together a consistent performance on Day 3 to keep the top
spot and win the fleet.
Cool Change, J30, Rusty Burshell
(Hampton/Yorktown) and Strega. S2 9.1, Neal
Garrett (Hampton, Yorktown) were tied for the lead in PHRF B2 going into
Day 3, when a protest at the start of Race 5 cost Strega a DSQ and
eventually bumped her to 3rd in the final standings.
On the BUCKROE COURSE: Day 1, three races
sailed; Day 2, one race sailed; and Day 3, two races
sailed.
Boats racing in each fleet: J24 - 6; PHRF C -
10; PHRF NS-2 (double headsail) - 9; PHRF NS-1 (single headsail) -
5; Cruising - 5
Among the J24 one-design fleet, Tripp Behm (Hampton) and crew
aboard #193 did what they had to do, win both races on the
final day of the regatta, to take the first place spot away from leader
Quicky, Mike Veraldi (Virginia
Beach).
In PHRF C, the top two contenders flip-flopped the lead after
each of the first two days of racing, and a first in the first race of the final
day of racing gained the overall win for Bumps Eberwine's
(Hampton/Suffolk), Spray, Olson 25, over Greg Miller
(Washington, North Carolina) and his tough team on Essobee, Lindenberg
26.
In the PHRF NS-2 fleet (double headsail allowed),
Incentive +, Olson 30, Lewie Lewis (Hampton) won each
of the first two days and tied on the third with second place overall
finisher Leo Wardrup (Virginia
Beach), Black Widow, Irwin 38-1.
Puff Card, Tartan 37-2, sailed by Walter
Boatwright (Norfolk, Newport News) and crew, dominated the PHRF
NS-1 (single headsail only) fleet by winning 5 of the 6 races. The
Edge, C&C 35-2, skippered by Mark Baldridge from Surf
City, North Carolina, took a first in Race 4 and finished a strong second
overall in the regatta.
In the Cruising Division, Tom
Pantelides' (Hampton) Mazi, Sabre 34, won
both races on Day 3 to bump Rick Carroll's (Virginia Beach)
Sur Le Vent, Beneteau Oceans 351, to second overall by one point.
Wind Conditions during the
regatta: Day #1 great racing, moderate winds across both
courses throughout the day. Day #2 proved especially challenging to
all as fluky and light stuff tested everyone's patience, but one race was
completed on each course when a sea "breezette" came in late in the
day. Day #3 was absolutely glorious for racing! The
fleet delayed departure from the harbor for approximately 30 minutes as a
front passed through and broke up just a couple of miles north of Hampton
Roads. Racing began in 8 - 12 knots, then was favored by a beautiful 12
to 15 knots for the remainder of the day. At the
conclusion of the racing there was plenty of wind left for a parting day sail
back to regatta headquarters.
