# 447 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday June 8, 2009 01:33PM
onThe Annapolis to Newport Race started Friday,
June 5, and one of the boats, Vela Veloce grabbed up
southern Bay racer Mark Wheeler at the last minute,
when her regular navigator unexpectedly could not make the
trip. Vela Veloce is a brand new R/P Southern Cross 52 owned by Richard Oland (St,
Johns, Canada). The boat is like a TP 52,
but optimized for IRC. It is hull #2. Dr. Robert Razenbach, Vela's main
navigator, was unable to make the trip due to
professional responsibilities. Seems there is more to it than "just
turning left at Cape Charles!"
Familiar faces at regattas in the southern Bay are the
Savage brothers, Doug and Tim. They have teamed up, Doug
as skipper and Tim as navigator, on Reprisal, their S2 10.3, in
the PHRF fleet for Annapolis-Newport. Lawrence
Cohen, who calls Gloucester, Virginia, his home is racing his Swan
48-2, Dawn Treader, in the Annapolis-Newport.
FISHING BAY CUT CHANNEL RACE is the
second race of the FBYC Distance Series: Eleven (11) boats took on
the almost 25 mile long race Saturday. The largest fleet, PHRF B/C
combined, had 8 boats on the starting line and the top finishers
were: 1.Last Boat III, Frank Murphy;
2.Shenanigan, Miles Booth; 3.Trilogy,
Wayland Rennie. Sam Mitchener's
Double Eagle was the quicker of two racing in PHRF A, and
Paul Cross, in Battlewagon, completed the course as a
PHRF Non-Spin. Principal Race Officer - Brooks Zerkel.
FLAG DAY is this coming Sunday, June 14th. Time
to fly yours!

Fleet. Eighteen (18) raced in the 2009 Home Towne Regatta,
sponsored by Portsmouth Boat Club on Saturday. This is the race that
usually coincides with the City of Norfolk's Harborfest Festival and the
Portsmouth Seawall Festival. Harborfest was a no-show this year, delayed
until the July 4th weekend and the completion of the revitalization of
Norfolk's Town Point Park. Look for Harborfest and Home Towne Bank Regatta
to be back on the same weekend in 2010! RESULTS: PHRF A/B (7
boats) - 1.Feather, Phil Briggs; 2.Bad Habit, Bob
Archer; 3.Independence, Graham Field. PHRF C (2 boats) -

HOSPICE REGATTA XV, Saturday, June 13,
2009. This marks the 15th time southern Bay racers have
undertaken "The challenge of sailing for others". Racing is
in Hampton Roads harbor, multiple lap windward/leeward course. Starts
for PHRF Fleets as well as a special Hospice Class. Hospice Class
entries are due by June 10 (Wednesday) to allow for assignment of Hospice Class
ratings. There will be a Skippers Meeting for Hospice Class skippers on
June 12 at Hampton Yacht Club at 1900 hours. This
race is a qualifier for the National Invitational Championship Race to be held
in 2010 by the National Hospice Regatta Alliance.
For info and entry, contact Glenn Giles at (757) 851-9690.
[Note: The 2009 National Invitational, hosted by the
Rochester Yacht Club in New York, concluded Sunday. Steve
Bowen, sailing out of York River Yacht Club as winner of the 2008
Turkey Shoot Hospice Regatta, finished 18th overall.]
DOWN THE BAY (DTB) was a "sea trial" for a few
of the ANNAPOLIS-NEWPORT boats: Four boats that did the Annapolis
to Hampton 120 mile, non-stop DTB Memorial Day weekend, are racing in the
Annapolis-Newport. Donnybrook (Jim Muldoon),
winner of line honors as well as first overall in the DTB,
Dare-Dare (Paul Fenn), Heron
(Greg Leonard), and Shinnecock (James
Praley) will all have done the double.

US SAILING CHAMPIONSHIPS
CORNER: Right up front on the slick color poster published by
US SAILING are a couple of items of interest to southern Bay racers.
First, the 2009 US JUNIOR WOMEN'S DOUBLEHANDED CHAMPIONSHIP is all set
for July 6 - 11 at Hampton Yacht Club. This is
locally known as "The Ida Lewis" or in racer shorthand, simply as "The
Ida". The regatta is limited to 40 two-junior women (age 13 to 18)
teams, and registration is almost complete. The competition will be
fleet racing in Club 420s. Event co-chairmen are Glenn and Carol
Giles - (757) 851-9690; Principal Race Officer is John McCarthy -
(757)
850-4225.
The US OFFSHORE SAILING CHAMPIONSHIP for the Lloyd Phoenix Trophy
will be Annapolis, September 25-27, not on the west coast.
The format is fleet racing on a closed course, except for one distance
race, in Navy 44s. To compete, sailors must have competed in at least 5
regattas in IRC, IMS, PHRF, MORC, or Portsmouth Numbers during the current
season. Among past winners of the Lloyd Phoenix are the southern Bay's
very own Sledd Shelhorse (1993) along with Roy Disney
(1992), Charlie Scott (1990, 1989), John White (1995),
who sailed his Bene FC10, 999, in Southern Bay Race Week
this past weekend , and others.
When the IDA LEWIS
competitors arrive in Hampton Roads, there will be one who is
certainly a familiar face in the area. Missy Flowe,
daughter of John and Cindy Flowe (currently Severna park, MD)
began her junior career at Hampton Yacht Club prior to her family's move up the
Bay to Annapolis. Missy's grandfather is Marty
Steffens of Hampton. Mary Ligon of
Poquoson will be
crewing with Missy and, as of now, they represent one of two
teams with a direct southern Bay attachment, Genevive
Marquardt (daughter of Elizabeth Marquardt) and Christina
Hudson (daughter of Lorri Conen) from Williamsburg, being the
other. John Yeigh who, along with Brett
Harrison, sailed A Parent Tripp to a fleet winner spot (PHRF
B1) in Southern Bay Race Week a week ago, will be back in the area for
Ida Lewis with his daughter, Megan Yeigh. The
Yeighs make their home in Annapolis. Cassie Todd will be
crewing with Megan.
Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA)
2009 Spring National Championships: Sailed this past week in
San Francisco, hosted by Stanford University and St. Francis Yacht Club.
Southern Bay collegiate teams finished among the top teams in
this prestigious event: In the Co-Ed Dinghy competition for the Henry
A. Morse Trophy, Georgetown University took 3rd and Old Dominion University
was 4th. And, in the Team Racing Championships Georgetown's
Bulldogs finished 3rd. ODU's women finished 4th in the Women's
Nationals. Kudos to both programs. Complete
results are available at www.collegesailing.org
COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO! The 22nd
ANNUAL COCK ISLAND RACE is weekend after this coming - June
19-20. Sponsored by the City of Portsmouth and administered
by Portsmouth Boat Club, the actual race is on June 20 - the rest is
party-eeee! Principal Race Officer for the event is Larry Bryant.
For info on the event contact: City of Portsmouth, Parks and Recreation,
(757) 393-8481.
Also, coming up this weekend, Saturday, June 13, is
the Yankee Point Yacht Club's Singlehanded Race.
Norfolk Collegiate School has special reason to be
especially proud of their varsity sailing team. Norfolk
Collegiate sailors, successfully competing in a rugged qualifying
system, made it to BOTH the Inter-Scholastic Sailing Association
(ISSA) High School National Doublehanded Fleet Racing Championship for the
Clifford D. Mallory Cup and the ISSA High School Team Racing Championship for
the Toby Baker Cup. And, the NCS team finished in the
TOP 10 in the Nation in both. The competition for the
Mallory Cup took place May 8-10, on Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg. NCS
finished 6th in the Nation in Fleet Racing. Then, it was on to San
Francisco Bay, Redwood City, California, for the Team Racing championships on
May 22-24. NCS finished 5th in the Nation in Team Racing.
Kudos to the NCS program coaches and young racers. Sailing for the
Norfolk Collegiate School team are: Seniors Gordon Wolcott
(team captain) and Johnny Davenport; Juniors Cameron Barclift and Walker Lobree,
Sophomores Kav Stokes, Andrew Prohaska, Teddy Stokes, and freshmen Ian
Stokes and Andy Granger.

MURPHY'S LAW: There were
some sweet action shots of Yrs Truly the Racing Beagle taken at
SBRW. The problem is that once word got around that the Murphster's
likeness was on the web, demand overburdened and shutdown all the sites.
Oh, la.. .fame does have its occasional drawbacks!
/S/ Murphy the
Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
