# 452 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Friday July 24, 2009 07:56AM
onSCREWPILE 2009 Wrap: Two Southern
Bay racing teams bring home Screwpile silver - Pete
Hunter's WAIRERE won
the PHRF A1 class and Leo Wardrup's BLACK
WIDOW won the PHRF Non-Spin
class. Southern Bay and beyond boats represented us all in fine
fettle at this year's showdown in Solomons. Special kudos are
due WAIRERE and BLACK WIDOW, both of whom won their
fleets, and Sledd Shelhorse,
Meredian 2, who took 2nd overall in the
PHRF A0 fleet, Sanford Richardson, a southern Bay
expatriate, sailing Kahuna in PHRF A1 to a second place finish
overall and Jake Brodersen, Midnight
Mistress, who took 2nd overall in PHRF
Non-Spin. Finishing 5th in their very competitive
fleets were Cash Flow, Lloyd Griffin, in PHRF A1 (14
boats); Rockette, Chuck Monsees, in PHRF A3
(13 boats); Goin', Dennis Hannick, in PHRF B (16
boats); and Schiehallion, Brad Miller, in PHRF C
(14 boats). All the Southern Bay boats at
Screwpile did themselves proud racing in conditions that ranged
from light to absolutely grand: Leroi Lissenden's
Voodoo 2 finished 8th and Sam Mitchener's Double
Eagle finished 12th in the PHRF A1 fleet of 15 boats.
John Blais' Stardancer was 6th in the Beneteau 36.7
one-design fleet (8 boats). Richard Payne's Flying
Colors sailed in the J/105 one-design fleet (11 boats) and
Bob Hausmann's Bobinski sailed for their first
time in PHRF C (14 boats) and, in their spinnaker "baptism under fire",
showed marked improvement each day. And, Tony Thornton's
TL Sea, coming out the Elizabeth River from Portsmouth Boat Club, took
8th in the PHRF Non-Spin fleet (10 boats). So, plenty of southern Bay and
beyond boats will be sporting Screwpile 2009 bow decals for the rest of the
summer, and to their credit, they can certainly say they have been in the
thick of Chesapeake Bay racing competition. For
detailed results, both overall standings and race by race results, check out the
event website at
Southern Bay Race Week racers all remember
the great young couple, Allen and Daniela, who are the masterminds as well
as broad backs of PHOTOBOAT, the official photogs for the
event. They have posted a photo and note saying they found time
to tie the matrimonial knot - congratulations!! Check out their wedding
picture (there is one) at the PHOTOBOAT website, www.photoboat.com .
Hint: Daniela and Allen are the ones in the RIB in full wedding
attire!
Coming up this Saturday, July 25th - THE VETERANS
CUP - compete in honor of veterans of our Armed
Forces. You do not have to be affiliated with the
Armed Forces to race in this regatta. The entry list is still growing and
this promises to be the best Vet Cup ever. For entry info
contact: John Ritter at (757) 329-6992. Langley Yacht Club is
the organizing authority of this regatta.
Forty-Seven (47) boats who did not make it to Screwpile,
engaged in a day of Non-Spinnaker racing on Norfolk's Willoughby Bay on
Saturday. Here are the fleet winners from the 2009 Little Bay
Challenge: Fleet 1 (8 boats): VIRGINIA H,
Andy Armstrong; Fleet 2 (10 boats): BAD
HABIT, Bob Archer; Fleet 3 (9
boats): BOO NASTY, Dave Bettis ;
Fleet 4 (9 boats): EXCELSIOR, Steve Ritz;
Fleet 5 ( 11 boats): HALAHA, Jeff
Rogers. Broad Bay SA handled the race administration and
Portsmouth Boat Club was party-meister. For the club team scoring,
final standings were: Willoughby Racers (BBSA) 1st place, Old Point
Comfort YC 2nd place, Hampton YC 3rd place, Portsmouth Boat
Club 4th place, and. Norfolk Naval Sailing Association 5th place.
Event chairman and race officer - Scott Almond.
More Screwpile [W]rap:
Each day Rockette, (Chuck Monsee's
J29), and crew were always the first back to their post-racing
accommodations at Screwpile.
They were rafted up with their Regatta Mothership, Pete
Wallio's big Morgan, Island Time. What
could be better than to kick back into "cruising mode" after a day of tough
racing and prior to moving into post-race party mode?!
Where did those Portsmouth Boat Club guys and others get
all those stogies? The area round the patio and pool deck
guest room entrances at Screwpile regatta headquarters was
cigar central during the regatta - a delightful outdoor cigar bar!
Several boats commandeered the Screwpile
regatta headquarters Holiday Inn Select outdoor picnic areas for
post-post-race party grillin'. It is uncertain who had the best
"tail gate" fare going, but it all smelled great!
On the Friday before Screwpile, a main
delivery day for southern Bay racers, weather caused a number of boats to
duck-in at spots along the route, a number at Fishing Bay. Tornado
warnings and just plain foul weather Friday afternoon was handled in stride,
though. Not much can get between southern Bay racers and
Screwpile!
One of the main Screwpile sponsors hit a
sweet spot with the racers at the terrific event - West Marine
Solomons (Manager Susan Dean) provided complimentary breakfast
fixin's at the Solomons store each morning to anyone who dropped by - and plenty
did!

MURPHY'S
LAW: 2009 Screwpile was, as usual, an A+
event. Yrs truly, the Racing Beagle,
had a grand time. Event organizers may have to come up with
two or more event championship trophies for 2010 to go with the racing
awards - one for best grilling performance and one for best stogies... oh,
and one for best dancing by a gorilla - he was awesome! It was all
soooooooooo good! /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the
sailing spirit in us all.
