Lin Mccarthy on Monday August 10, 2009 11:17AM

Staying close by  home for LABOR DAY WEEKEND?  Here a couple of special southern Bay options that will help balance budgets as well as family end-of-summer demands.  Both events have been around for awhile:
15th ANNUAL STINGRAY POINT REGATTA - Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6):  Since its beginning 15 years ago, the Stingray Point Regatta has been near and dear in southern Bay racers' hearts.  The unique setting at Fishing Bay Yacht Club, the special attention to pre-and post-race social activities, and two-days (Saturday and Sunday) of good, round-the-buoys racing guarantees a great weekend.  And, organizers have left Monday, the actual holiday, open for a return delivery home.    Stingray Point offers starts for all PHRF classes (non-Spin is single headsail only) as well as J/105 one-design and other monohull [keel boat] one-design classes with sufficient entries.  For entry and details contact  Event Chairman David Hinckle (804) 370-7650 or check out the FBYC web site at www.fbyc.net.
9th ANNUAL DINK VAIL REGATTA - Saturday, September 5:  DVR 9 is a one day event,  sailed in Hampton Roads harbor, offering starts for PHRF A, B, C, Non-Spin in addition to a Cruising fleet.  There's a skippers welcome reception at the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club lounge on Friday, September 4, a continental breakfast Saturday morning on the club south patio, and a reception and awards banquet following racing in the NYCC Main Bar and Dining Room on Saturday at 1800.  For docking arrangements at NY&CC, contact their harbormaster, Dino, directly at (757) 286-1752.   For entry and details contact John Hume at (757) 288-9985.
No matter where you intend to scratch your racing itch on Labor Day weekend, it is helpful to event organizers to know well in advance, for planning purposes, of your intentions.  Go ahead and enter now - enjoy the last official summer holiday.

VIRGINIA H   masters the Masters!   Andy and Virginia Armstrong's Soverel 30, Virginia H, proved to be just the ticket to ride in the 2009 Masters race sponsored by Hampton Yacht Club.  This is the annual event where the Old F- rts rule.  You must be at least 55 years old to sail and the boat must be at least 10 years old to entry and race.  And, sail they did.  Eleven (11) boats full of wisdom, knowledge, experience, and unbounded opinions came out to the race course to match wits.  Race Chairman Dave Revill estimates that there were approximately 1,980 years of experience on Hampton Flats racing Saturday!   The fleet went almost 10 miles in an 8-12 knots breeze.  OFs on overall winner Virginia H were:  Andy and Virginia Armstrong, Hank Eure, Dennis Quinn, Alice Alvord, Joe New, and Mike Berndt.      RESULTS:  1. Virginia H,  Andy Armstrong; 2. Cool Change, Rusty Burshell;  3. Feather, Phil Briggs.

GATOR  Grabs the Admiral's Cup!   Dave Crossett won the 2009 Admiral's Cup in his Nightwind 35, Gator.  The 13th  running of the race for the Admiral's Cup was co-sponsored by Seaford and York River Yacht Clubs.  The racing took place in a 10-12 knots breeze off Seaford. RESULTS: PHRF Spinnaker Fleet (A, B, C combined) - 1.Mike Austin, Movin' On (Beneteau FC8);  2.Ben Weeks, Rumble (J29);  3.Jim Bordeaux, Solstice (J40).  PHRF Non-Spin: - 1. Dave Crossett, Gator (Nightwind 35);  2.Chuck Eldred, Gail Force (Hobie 33);  3.Dan Fox, Shenandoah (J30).

This coming Sunday the 505 North American Championship (Aug 16-20) and the 505 World Championship (Aug 21-30)  all begin at  St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco.  The southern Chesapeake's own Tyler Moore (Hampton, skipper) is teamed up with Geoff Ewenson of Annapolis for these premier events.  So, cross those toes and plan to leave them crossed throughout the two weeks of racing for Tyler and Geoff as they match wits and skills against the rest of the best from all over the globe.

Southern Seahawk, A Novel of the Civil War at Sea  by Randall Peffer.  Fiction, politics, romance and adventure mixed with nautical and historical facts.  A tale wrapped around  "Raphael Semmes' Confederate cruiser SUMTER [which] makes a daring escape through the Federal Blockade of the Mississippi..."  and ....   Well, it's a great summer read, especially if you like that sort of thing.   Bluewater racers and cruisers will recognize favorite Caribbean and further south destinations in the narrative too.

HAMPTON ONE-DESIGN 75th NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA - is THIS weekend, August 14 -16, hosted by Hampton Yacht Club.  HOD sailors and friends from all points of the compass are expected to attend the social events as well as the racing.  A special Heritage Race is planned for Saturday, so that all who care to, whether actually competing for the 2009 National title or just soaking up the socializing,  may participate in the historic "on the water" scene.  There will be lots of special doings, including the unveiling of refurbished Hull #1, which has been undertaken by the " world renown refurbishment experts" at The Mariners' Museum (Newport News, Virginia).  For registration and other info, contact Dave Chapman, National Regatta Chairman, at  (757) 726-9640 or hod75th@verizon.net  or class website  www.shorenet.net/hamptonone

By the Way - when the Wheeler entry won the Governors Cup in the HOD fleet a weekend ago,  they became the only racers to win it 4 times.  All 4  Guv Cups belong to the husband-wife team of Mark and Kathy Wheeler who sailed together in each of the 4 wins -  a dynamic duo indeed!

MURPHY'S LAW:  It was sooooo hot yesterday that it  melted whiskers and caused furry spots to spread.  Yrs Truly, the Racing Beagle,  now has a new look -  smooth muzzle and more tan..., although still grand when it comes to looks!  Stay cool - another scorcher today!   /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
