FBYC 70th ANNUAL ONE-DESIGN REGATTA -
It was a big weekend for small boat one-design racing on the Rappahannock River
this past weekend. An assortment of 56 Albacores, Flying Scots,
Frontrunners, Mobjacks, Typhoons and San Juan 21s showed up to race in
this 70 year old event. Even though Saturday, like just
about everywhere south of the Virginia-Maryland border, proved to be a challenge
weather-wise on the Rapp, the fleets got in 5 or 6 races and
competition in each fleet was hot and heavy. For a detailed report of each
of the fleets, please check out the Fishing Bay Yacht Club website at www.fbyc.net. Here are
the fleet winners: Albacore (9 boats) - tied for first,
but winning the tie-breaker, Marty Hublitz;
Flying Scot (25 boats) - David Neff;
Frontrunner (8 boats) - Matthew Braun;
Mobjack (4 boats) - Tom Roberts; San Juan 21 (2
boats) - William McClure;
Typhoon (8 boats) - James Bearden.
Lasers (adult division) - results pend. Principal Race Officer
- Rick Klein.

HAMPTON ONE-DESIGN 75th NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP - Latane
Montague and crew Pellerito, who Latane swears he never met before
this weekend, swept the HOD National Championship held in Hampton, Virginia,
this past weekend. The Montague/Pellerito team was all but unbeatable,
posting 5 bullets over the three day, six race regatta. Their one
throw-out was a third place finish in Race #1. Latane says he has his new
found crew's cell phone number written in permanent ink on his
wrist! Four other boats battled down to the last race of the last
day (Sunday) for second place while the rest of the 20 boat championship fleet
enjoyed three great days of racing, great wind, grand parties, and a special
Mariners' Museum unveiling of restored HOD Hull #1 and its placement
in an honored position at the entrance of the Museum's International Small Craft
Center. TOP 5 RESULTS: 1.
Montague/Pellerito [3] -1 -1 -1 -1 -1; 2.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP was hosted by Hampton Yacht Club. Event Chairmen

and Glenn Giles. Official Scorer - Scott Almond.
"It was a dark and stormy night...
" when sixteen (16) boats set off Friday night to race
non-stop from Hampton Roads to Cape Charles on the Eastern Shore and
return. The annual Plantation Light Race, organized and
sponsored by Hampton Yacht Club, proved to be not so daunting
for the quicker PHRF A and PHRF B boats, and more of an endurance
test for the PHRF C and PHRF Non-Spin fleets. All 16 raced just over 46
miles. Christian Schaumloffel, Mirage, Hobie 33,
was the only PHRF A boat sailing. Of the 7 PHRF B
boats, Harry Tenny's Margarita took 1st,
Ben Cuker's Callinectes finished 2nd, and
Andy Armstrong's Virginia H was 3rd. Four (4)
boats raced in PHRF C and the top 2 finishers were Martin
Casey, Bowmovement, and Justin Morris,
The Hunter. And, of the four boats racing in PHRF
Non-Spin, the top two finishers were Leo Wardrup, Black
Widow, and Cliff Porter in Scoundrel.
First to finish was Mirage; she crossed the finish line shortly after
2:30 AM Sunday. The last to finish was a Non-Spinnaker boat who came in
about 8:00 AM on Sunday. All boats started between 7 and 7:20 PM on
Saturday. Principal Race Officer - Bob Thomas.
One of the highlights of the HOD 75th anniversary celebration
at The Mariners Museum was the awarding of the Mariners Trophy
to HOD racer Charles McCoy, Jr for his service to
the HOD Class and to sailing. Mr. McCoy was
racing this year in his 50th consecutive HOD National Championship
regatta. He and his crew, son Charles McCoy III
finished 9th overall in the championship regatta and won the
special Heritage Race run on Sunday morning for the special
fleet of wooden hull, "heritage", boats.
Racers are well known for traveling great distances and faster
than legal speeds to make race boat dock-departure times. It happens to
others on the race course too. For example, Rob and Sue
Stephens, part of the HOD race committee, who had been called to
multiple family emergency situations, drove straight through from New Jersey,
BY-PASSING THEIR HOME IN WILLIAMSBURG, to be on time for the HOD
regatta in Hampton. And, that was on top of a couple of days before
undertaking 48 hours of air travel to return from the "other side of the
Pond."
Portsmouth Boat Club reports completion of their
Barnacle Summer Regatta Series. Winners of the two
non-spinnaker fleets were, Tim Savage (Tantrum)
and Bob Old (Jezebel) tied for first, and
Ron Peterman (Content) first in fleet 2.
Be careful when you let go of those "used"
one-design boats. Marty Hublitz, who won the Albacore fleet at
FBYC this past weekend, did so in Barney Harris' first HAPCO Albacore.
Marty (3-2-1-4-1) beat Barney ( 1-3-2-3-2) in the tie
breaker.
9th ANNUAL DINK VAIL REGATTA -
Saturday, September 5: Hosted by Norfolk Yacht and Country
Club. DVR 9 is a one day event, sailed in Hampton Roads harbor,
offering starts for PHRF A, B, C, Non-Spin in addition to a Cruising
fleet. There's a skippers welcome reception at the NY&CC lounge on
Friday, September 4, a continental breakfast Saturday morning on the club south
patio, and a reception and awards banquet following racing in the NYCC Main Bar
and Dining Room on Saturday at 1800. For docking arrangements at

MURPHY'S LAW: The
racing season is reaching a fevered pitch in the personal wardrobe
department. This is when the car trunk truly is a race
gear closet - stuff for when it might shower, stuff for Indian
Summer days in the high 80s, stuff for late day or evening racing when the
Fall chill hits the southern Bay and, of course, there are all those summer
regatta T-shirts you have earned. For Yrs Truly, the Racing
Beagle, of course, it is the time of constant change -
growing fur, shedding fur, growing fur, shedding... well you've got the
picture. /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit
in us all.
