#478 A SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Tuesday February 2, 2010 10:22AM
onIt's good to be 4P: If you
intend to race PHRF, you need a 2010 Valid Rating Certificate from PHRF
of the Chesapeake, and, for most southern Bay races, you must meet
PHRF Equipment Category 4P. PHRF is very specific
about what is required when YOU check the Equipment Category box on the
application. PHRF says, "Ensure you review the PHRF Special Regulations for safety requirements and sign the
Certification of Compliance
(Keep this certificate on your boat) BEFORE checking off the
Equipment Category (4P, 5P, or 6P). Your
application form must check off the Equipment Category (4P, 5P,
or 6P)." NOTE: The "lifeline exception" to the
4P requirements is clearly explained on the Certification of
Compliance document that is part of the PHRF certificate. So, get
yourself a quiet moment, read the PHRF requirements, and complete your
application or renewal forms. It's part of getting ready to go
racing. For info www.phrfchesbay.com
USA women, led by Anna,
top Rolex Miami ORC Women's Match Racing. From US
SAILING press releases: "In the Women’s Match Racing finals,
Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, Fla.), Molly
Vandemoer (Redwood City, Calif.) and Debbie Capozzi
(Bayport, N.Y.) defeated Lucy MacGregor’s GBR team in a highly charged,
best-of-five series. . . . .“We had a great day on the water,” said
Tunnicliffe. “My team did a great job of staying in the game despite the two
losses in the beginning. We fought back and kept it calm and pulled off
the moves we needed to and are so happy we came out on
top.”
Tomorrow, February 2nd, is GROUNDHOG DAY!
It will take a united effort to bring on an EARLY SPRING.
It calls for a cloudy day tomorrow so that the Groundhog will not be
frightened back into his hole by his shadow. If he goes back into his
hole, there will be 6 more weeks of winter (and all the bad stuff that
accompanies that, e.g. low temps, soggy snow, delayed bottom painting,
etc.)
Snow News: A reader asks, "Is it
true that Buddy Melges is bringing his ice boat to Hampton Creek for this
weekend regatta?" Jack Huenerberg had to fly the postponement ,
"This is the first [BBSA] annual dinner that has had to be postponed in it's
span of 51 years. That's amazing in that all have been held in January
and we had a lot of snow in the earlier days."
The NAVY is coming! The NAVY is coming!
The United States Naval Academy (USNA) is sending two of their varsity
offshore teams and boats to SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK
2010 (June 4-6). This is the second time the USNA boats
have been to Southern Bay Race Week. They were here in 2008 and raced
in the PHRF A fleet. Information and entry forms
for SBRW are available at www.blacksealcup.com
The Hampton Roads Sunfish Challenge and Dinghy
Distance Race, which was run for the first time last September,
goes from Willoughby Bay to the Old Dominion University Sailing Center.
Founders Jimmy Schools and Jonathan Romero have aligned with
Portsmouth Boat Club as the 2010 Organizing Authority
for the event. This is good news for all the dinghy sailors looking for a
fun challenge - race along the edge of the channel that borders the USN warships
berthed in Norfolk along the Elizabeth River. Awesome!
Early Birds are Top of the List: Two
southern Bay racers already have claimed "first to enter" honors:
Bob Archer (Norfolk), Bad Habit (Pearson Flyer) is the
first official entry in SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK. Sledd
Shelhorse (Virginia Beach), Meridian 2 (Farr
36) is first to register for the DOWN THE BAY RACE, PHRF
A. Richard Griner (Tracys Landing, MD),
Coyote, C&C 115, is first to enter the DTB Non-Spin
fleet.
SPRING COMETH!
In the Winter doldrums? Take in a flick at The
Mariners' Museum. Starting this Thursday evening and
going for five weeks (every Thursday night, 7:00PM) TMM
will offer a "Classic Movie Cafe" featuring some fun
"maritime" films. The first one, this Thursday, is
"McHale's Navy" (the original -- you just gotta have Tim
Conway). Here is a link with the information and film
titles:
On-line entry is now available for the
DOWN THE BAY RACE (May 28-29, 2010) of Memorial Day
Weekend. To enter or peruse the entry list, log on to www.yachtscoring.com
. It's not too early to enter the 61st running of this Annapolis to
Hampton race. Details on the 2010 DTB are available at www.hamptonyc.com -

Look for your Cruising Club of
Virginia (CCV) 2010 membership application in the mail any day
now. Turn it around fast, since members who wish to be listed in the
2010 CCV Racing Guide must get their information and dues in no later
than February 14th. If you have questions or need and application
form, contact CCV Commodore Jake Brodersen at Captain_Jake@cox.net
Include carrots in your racing provisions -
there are night racing opportunities on this year's
Southern Bay Schedule. Some of these races will be sailed mostly at night,
some start in the daylight and end at night, and some do both.
All of the races included in the list below are intended to include nighttime
racing. Most racers have been in a race or races that were not
intended to end in the dark, but had no deadline and so. . .
Here are some southern Bay races that require a special set of nighttime racing
skills:
May 28 Down the Bay Race
(HYC-STC)
Jun 25 York River
Moonlight Race (YRYC)
Jun 26 Moonlight
Race (FBYC)
July
24 Moonlight Triangle Race
(CCV)
Aug
20 Plantation Light Race
(HYC)
Aug 21 Smith Point
Race (FBYC)
2010 CCV races will include, in addition to
starts for all PHRF fleets, a Cruising fleet. This is the
second time (2008) CCV has offered this racing opportunity to those who do
not wish to compete in a PHRF class, but do want to do some "casual"
racing.

MURPHY'S
LAW:
Dear Readers,
Murphy, the Racing
Beagle, who was believed to have been on an extended Key West Race
Week celebratory tour and recovery, has been sighted. Faithful reader and "reporter at-large" for
SBRNYCU R.Klein reports: " A friend
of mine (yes, I have one!) driving up from Jacksonville, FL believed he
saw Murphy on I-95 just south of Rocky Mount, NC, heading north. While my
friend was getting some coffee at the Rocky Mt. exit, he also observed what he
thought was the "Murphmobile" exiting I-95 and reversing his direction to
the south. It is only conjecture on my part, but it may be that Murphy was
attempting to return to Hampton Roads, heard about the impending "historical"
snow storm, and was now headed back south. As we all know Murphy is
smarter than most! Will the Murphster stop in Charleston and
wait for the April regatta?? "
