Race Boat: Two great programs in the southern
Bay for folks who want to learn to crew on a race boat. Fishing
Bay Yacht Club cranks up with their first classroom meeting on Tuesday,
March 23, in Richmond at the Retreat Hospital Board Room (6:30 - 9:30pm).
For detail contact Jim Snowa at (804) 323-1510 OR go to www.fbyc.net and click on "Crew Training
Registration". Later in the Spring, the Cruising Club of Virginia
(CCV) begins their Racing Crew Training course with the first classroom
session on Tuesday, May 25, and the first on water session on Wednesday, May 26,
all in Hampton. For info contact Dave Taylor (757) 344-5292. Both of
these programs are OPEN TO ALL and do require registration and
fees.
Do you fit the pit? Can you wrangle the
winches? Can you haul on the halyards? Can you trim, hike hard, help
jibe, or pack the chute? You must be racing crew, so
get yourself to the SpinSheet Crew Listing
Party - South, on Saturday, April 3, (5pm - 7pm) at Marker 20,
a racers' restaurant/bar/grill, in downtown Hampton.
This event is OPEN TO ALL. Here is a golden opportunity for crewbies to
find skippers and vice versa. Find your ride or find your
crew for the 2010 season. Check out crew and check out skippers!
Racers, experienced and newbie, also will be able to look at offerings of
various southern Bay yacht clubs and sailing organizations which will have
representatives at the party. All you have to do is show up - no sign-up
required. OH, and wear socks you can burn!
SpinSheet Magazine is the organizer of this
event. For specific information please contact event
liaison Dave Taylor at (757) 344-5292.
The SBRW EARLY BIRD flock is
building. Racers are a frugal group, so not adverse
to saying money. Racers are a fun group, so not adverse to receiving 10
free SBRW regatta drink tickets. To do both, get at least $10 off your
entry free and get the 10 free drink ticks, be sure to enter SOUTHERN BAY
RACE WEEK no later than April 17th. The sooner you enter the better it is
for organizers who are busy making plans for "tender, loving care" of the racers
at SBRW 2010. For entry forms and info go to www.blacksealcup.com or contact Lin
McCarthy at mcbear@earthlink.net
or (757) 850-4225.
Leo Wardrup's BLACK WIDOW
is the first SBRW Early Bird entry in the PHRF Non-Spin-2
fleet (double headsail allowed). The Widow returns to SBRW
2010 for a run at the fleet title; she finished 2nd in 2009 to Louie
Lewis' Incentive+.
ARRRRRRRRRRGH! Attention, all BUCCANEER 18

the 40th Annual Buccaneer 18 North American Championships June
21-25. The event is open to all Buccaneer owners and
associates. All pirates are welcome! Registration is open and
forms are available at www.BuccSOMD.org This
event will be hosted by the same organization, SMSA, that hosts the Screwpile
Challenge Regatta, in Solomons, MD, every July.
Pasquotank River Yacht Club, Elizabeth City, NC, hosted a Race
Management Clinic for Sound area clubs Saturday. The clinic was organized
and honcho-ed by Greg Duncan; John
McCarthy led the clinic. A special coffee was provided by Greg
for the clinic participants - Deadman's Reach High Speed Blend Dark Roast
Coffee. The bag looks like a NOAA chart and the message on it
says, "Served in bed, raises the dead!" The bag itself is worth having for
the fun reading and the coffee was good too. Available by calling Raven's
Brew Coffee, Alaska, 1-800-917-2836 or going to www.ravensbrew.com

MURPHY'S LAW: St.
Paddy's Day is Wednesday! In honor of me racing cousin Shamus
McMurphy, Yrs Truly, the Racing Beagle, has tinted me
fur shamrock green. The Murphster will be 100% green through and
through (we're not referring to the global environment,
here) after me celebratory visit to a me favorite pub where green beer will
flow. Happy St Patrick's Day! /S/ Murphy the
Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
