Finish.
Vinegar is good to bust up
corrosion, according to boat rig experts. So, douse that gunked up
sheave at the top of the mast with some vinegar. Remember, now, vinegar
NOT sugar, unless you want to attract a swarm of flies up there.
It's not Cape Horn, but rounding Factory
Point is just as significant to race boats wintering at
Belle Isle or Dandy Point (north of Hampton, near Langley AFB). Wham
Bam, Dave Taylor's Adrews 27, splashed on
Saturday and came around Factory Point on Sunday.
Dock Gossip - lots of it around this time
of year. Be careful. The info started as "Skipper X bought
a new main". By the time the rumor got back to Skipper X, he had
"...bought a new BOAT!"
Lots of boat yard activity this past
weekend. Among those scurrying around underneath fast bottoms
were several at Wormley Creek Marina and Boat Yard. Jim
Bordeaux has Solstice, J/40, very close to being shot and
splashed. David Eberwine's J36, Sea Star, is
gleaming in the spring sun and looks ready to make the trip down the York River
to Hampton Roads, maybe in a few days. Wally
Parolari has his Catalina 320, Makaira, almost ready to launch
(hoping for a rigging part to arrive). After a little bit of boot stripe
painting and annual prop maintenance, Makaira will be heading
home to Willoughby. Two San Juan 24s, Paul
Young's Daystar and Cliff Porter's
Scoundrel are at Wormley getting ready. Ben
Weeks' and Michele Cochran's J/29, Rumble, looks pretty close
to splash and freedom from the jack stands. And, Mike
Austin and the Movin' On crew
are prepping her bottom and making sure the Beneteau FC8 will keep on
goin' fast. Boat yards are like hospitals - great to be there
while you need to be, but seeing them over the stern is even
better!
Fleet unity is a good thing.
Gremlin's (Elliott 770) skipper, Greg Cutter, and
Cari are hosting a party this coming weekend for B Fleet
skippers. No doubt they will hash out tactics and strategies while sharing
some libations and nibbies.
North Sails in Hampton, Va. (804)
722-4000 has joined with North Sails Chesapeake (Annapolis)
to be a drop-off point for sailors' donations of old sails to the people in
Haiti. John and Linda Dodge have established
Project Sails to Save Haiti as a donation
program designed to get as many used sails (the bigger the better, but they will
take anything) as well as spinnaker poles, lines, and anything else one might
think of to construct shelter in an effort to help
the over 600,000 Haitians who have no cover due to the
January 12th earthquake that killed over 230,000. With the rainy season now upon
them, time is of the essence. For more
information, email or call John at dodger8385@aol.com or
804-334-6950.
2010 SPINSHEET Crew
Listing Party - South - Skippers looking for crew and crew
looking for a ride crammed the deck of Marker 20 in downtown Hampton,
Saturday evening at the 2010 SpinSheet sponsored event. It
was a great start to what hopefully will become an annual
event. Dave Wilbar from SailTime,
picked up the tab for the keg and got to meet a lot of southern Bay sailors
face-to-face. SpinSheet honchos Mary Ewenson,
publisher, Molly Winans, editor, and Rachel Engle, advertising
rep, made the trip down from Annapolis to meet and hobnob with
racers. The beer was cold and the decibels high!
Everybody says racers are a "little
dinghy"; here's a way to prove it. The Colonial Sail and
Power Squadron is holding the first ever Dinghy Poker Run
Event to benefit VIMS on April 17, 2010 at Salt Ponds
Marina. If you have a dinghy, kayak or a jet ski, you can participate in
the water portion of the event. Check out this link for more information

If you find yourself already ready
for Sunday (April 11th) CCV TUNE-UP Races, and want to
till the matter of your fertile mind, give this a thought for Saturday, early
afternoon. THE MARINERS' MUSEUM presents author Michael Krondl ( A
Taste of Conquest: The Rise and Fall of the Three Great Cities of
Spice) who will focus on the Portuguese, their
ships, and their explorations, and how spices played such a big role.
One result was a global food exchange that accompanied the Cape Horn route to
India and changed the way the world ate.
Saturday,
April 10, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. Free for members and with paid Museum
admission. Huntington Room - Brown Bag Lunch Lecture
MURPHY'S LAW: Yrs Truly, the Racing
Beagle, being a connoisseur of all things good to eat, noticed with
interest the upcoming presentation at The Mariners' Museum on Saturday at
lunch time (see item above). The Portuguese may have changed the
way we eat, but . . . and The Murphster speaks from experience. .
. POST-RACE PARTIES have changed the way we drink!
Race ready and ready to boogie! /S/ Murphy the Racing
Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
