CCV SPRING SERIES OPENS WITH A BEAUTIFUL
BANG! TREATY OF GHENT (tied with SEA
STAR), COOL CHANGE, ROUNDABOUT, and OLD
SCHOOL win the day in their fleets. Thirty-eight (38) skippers and
crew brought their boats to the starting line yesterday in Hampton Roads.
Ample wind (12-15 knots with gusts in the low 20's), sunshine, and friendly seas
(2-3 feet) held throughout both races. Some spinnakers did wrap, there was
some shrimping, there were some tight mark roundings. All in all, the
fleet did fine. Crews got a workout and new sails proved their
worth. It was racing and it was grand! RESULTS: PHRF

CCV Spring Series Race #3 - Sunday, April 25.
This is a one-race day for CCV. The race will be sailed in
Hampton Roads harbor, will be around fixed marks, and, conditions permitting,
will be a middle distance race. For this race, all classes also
will be scored for the 2010 Chesapeake Bay Distance Racing
Series (sponsored by Broad Bay Sailing Association). Racers will
need to be familiar with the 2010 CCV Sailing Instruction and will have to refer
to the CCV Marks List. Entries (including any CCV fleet changes) are due
no later than Saturday, April 24. Racers who have a CCV Racing
Membership are automatically entered. Remember, the CCV
on-the-water check-in procedure is required by the
Sailing Instruction - it won't hurt a bit and it makes for better, safer
racing. Cowboy up! Let's go racing! For information, please
contact John McCarthy at (757) 850-4225.
NOTE: The CCV 2010 Racing Guide is available at the
Hampton Yacht Club office during business hours. The Guide
is included in your CCV membership; if you have not already, you may join when
you pick up your book.
Delayed CONGRATULATIONS are in order for skipper
Bob Fleck and the crew of HORIZON, S2 7.9. Seems there was
an error in the scoring of a tie and the Hardyville Boat Boys finished
first in PHRF E at Charleston Race Week. Extra
special CONGRATULATIONS!
Watch your P s [and Q s]. It's a
PHRF rating thing that is important to everyone, especially southern Bay
racers. Most southern Bay events require that boats meet
Equipment Category 4P. This is self-certification
of compliance. When you apply for a PHRF rating, you indicate which EC
level you meet (top, center of application form). You can review the
4P requirements at the PHRF website,
www.phrfchesbay.com . If you
are not rated 4P, and you meet the requirements (or a specific exception,
e.g. no lifelines, applies), contact PHRF at (410) 414-3270, Stew Buckler, will
help you get straight.
'Tis crabpot season. The crabpots are on
Hampton Bar and in other warmer, thin water on the Bay. They will be there until
the crabs move to deeper waters. It's a Mother Nature thing.
Crabbers and racers have shared the same water for a long, long
time. So, keep a watch for the pot floats and beware that
there are some well camouflaged, tough-to-see black floats out there.
Think CRABCAKES, and race on!

What happens at SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK, stays at
SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK! especially when you are talking about
shore-side activity. A lot of crews study
"mixology"
and
"brewology" from the semi-professional side by taking a
shift (one hour) at the beer truck or rum bar as a crew. Also, get to
socialize with all the other racers and friends on the property at the post-race
party. So, continue your crew tradition or start a new one - sign up with
Suzanne Hamilton at suzanneshamilton@gmail.com -
pick your hour to be in the spotlight! The best shifts go fast, so
get in touch with Suzanne quick.
