#502 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE
Monday August 2, 2010 12:57PM
onWebmasters are critical to events in
these days and times. We have a lot of good ones in the sailing
community and certainly on the southern Bay. Folks who give
their time and genius to special racing events on the southern Bay
certainly come to mind - most recently, Jon Deutsch (2010 Opti
National Championship Regatta), and Buddy DeRyder (Southern Bay
Race Week for the Black Seal Cup). It's a tough job requiring talent,
time, skill, patience, and judgment.
Fishing Bay Yacht Club is hosting their 71st Annual One Design Regatta, in two weeks, August 14 & 15. Classes expected include: 420, Albacore, Hampton, Flying Scot, Front Runner, Laser, Laser Radial, Mobjack, and Optimist. The FBYC-ers have done this 70 times before - chances are it will be a fun event done right! David Hinckle is the Event Chair - (804) 370-7650; Rick Klein is Principal Race Officer, (804) 832-5079. Details and on-line registration are available at www.fbyc.net The regatta organizing authority has confirmed that there will not be Portsmouth fleet at FBYC AOD - Five or more boats are required for a fleet at this regatta.
TYLER MOORE and GEOFF EWENSON in the thick of things
at the 505 Worlds in Denmark. Tyler (Hampton) and Geoff
(Annapolis) are fighting conditions and equipment (bent mast in 1st race in
30+ knots) as well as a fleet of more than 100 world class 505 racers.
Five races are in the books and that makes one throw-out available. There
have to be 8 races in order for a second throw-out to apply. Today,
Monday, is a lay day. Also racing in Denmark at the 505 Worlds are
southern Bay father and son team, dad Chris and son Tom
Rassmussen from Hampton. Follow the 505-ers at www.505sapworldchampionship2010.com
(some patience is required).
CAPE CHARLES CUP - August 14 -15, Saturday and
Sunday. A point to point to point race for
racers and cruisers. This is certainly one
of the best two-day southern Bay summer regattas. There are two
races - on Saturday race from Norfolk's Little Creek area to Cape Charles,
party and spend the night at the lovely Bay Creek Resort and Marina
(or dock at Cape Charles Harbor), and then race on Sunday from Cape Charles to
Buckroe. This is billed as the regatta that appeals equally to racers and
cruisers. In the Racing Division there are starts for all PHRF
classes, including separate classes for PHRF Non-Spin Double Headsail and PHRF
Non-Spin Single Headsail. There is also a Cruising Division
for monohulls and a Multihull Division for "boats designed for open water
voyages (no beach-launched vessels)." Broad Bay Sailing
Association pulls it all together. Event Chair - Jim Williams; PRO - John
McCarthy. For information and entry, please contact Scott Almond
at (757) 471-2663 or CCCup@broadbaysailing.org.
Entries for the 2010 Cape Charles Cup close
on Monday, August 9, at 1500 hours. Git on it , time's a
flyin'!
Amthor takes 10th in
Ontario. Henry Amthor is back home from the Canadian
Laser Masters Championships in, as Henry described it, "the great white
north at Sturgeon Lake Ontario. (July 23-25)." The temperatures were
in the 70's (break out the long underwear!). Henry did great among some
really stiff competition. The 53 boat fleet included two former World
Champions, seven past National Champions, and a couple of Olympians.
Southern Bay racer John Blais'
Stardancer finished 2nd it the 7 boat one-design
Beneteau 36.7 fleet at the Integrity Summer Invitational hosted by Herrington
Harbor Sailing Association. The boats got in a total of
four races Saturday and yesterday. Stardancer was tied for first
overall, but fleet winner Jubilee (Keith Mayes) won the tie
breaker by posting a second win in the fourth and final race.
US SAILING has announced that the Racing Rules of
Sailing for 2009-2012 application is now available for Android
Phones. Imagine, all of the rules are available at the
touch of a finger. Remember, though, you need to know and understand the
rules. There really is not time on the race course to find the phone and
flip through the rules to decide what's ok and what isn't. Go to your
first and best option - your top knot! (Don't forget to update and
refresh there, too.)
RACERS AND THE RULES QUIZ: (Answer follows in this issue
of SBRNYCU.) You are sailing on starboard tack
when, in your opinion, you are fouled by a boat on port tack. You crash
tack to avoid collision, thus losing considerable ground to not only that boat
but several others. At the end of the race it is obvious that you would
have won the race had you not had to crash tack. Can you request redress to get
back the time you lost as a result of the offending boat's action?
REALLY, REALLY BUSY WEEKEND COMING UP:
Something for every racer of every
stripe!

Answer to RR Quiz Question: Nope.
And, for two reasons: First, you cannot "get back" time lost
because of another boat fouling you in a right of way situation
(port/starboard, tacking too close, room at a mark, etc.) unless
there was injury to a person or damage to your boat.
RRS Rule 62 explains this further.
Second, it's too late. You could have protested the other boat
immediately at the time of the incident and, perhaps, seen that boat
disqualified. However, you do not get to think about it awhile and then
protest later. Except in rare situations, boat vs boat protests for right
of way incidents must happen immediately and then be followed up with the
filing of a written protest following the race within the time limit.
