onLatane Montague made it his
5th Hampton One-Design National Championship at the
HOD Class showdown in Fishing Bay this past weekend. Latane has won
the title in 1999, 2003, 2007, 2009, and, now, in 2010. Thirteen (13) HODs
raced in light air on opening day Friday, got in three nice races on
Saturday, and squeezed two more in on Sunday; the total of 6 allowed for
one throw-out in the final tabulations. Latane sailed with crew
Jaci Finney. Second overall was Gordon
Wolcott with crew Perrin Priest, and third was
Eddie Wolcott sailing with Rachael
Blake. Fishing Bay Yacht Club hosted the event. Complete
results are available at www.fbyc.net Principal
Race Officer - Rick Klein.
Moonlight Races have plenty of moonshine, but
fickle winds:
*Plantation Light Race
winds went light and more racers went home than finished. Eleven (11)

1.Meridian, Sledd Shelhorse; PHRF B (5
boats) - 1. Rumble, Ben Weeks and Michele
Cochran; 2.Gremlin, Greg Cutter;
3.Margarita, Harry Tenney NOTE: A
protest pends in PHRF B. PHRF Non-Spin (3
boats) - 1. Virginia Lee, Mike
Brannon. Hampton Yacht Club sponsors this
event. Principal Race Officer - Bob Thomas.
*In the Fishing Bay Yacht Club
Smith Point Race, nine(9) started on Saturday, and all 9
finished by the wee hours of Sunday. RESULTS: PHRF A
(4 boats) - 1.Loose Cannon, Strother Scott;
2.Sweet Liberty, Thomas Larkin. PHRF B

MAYDAY, MAYDAY,
MAYDAY! A call most boaters hope they never have to make;
and, most will enjoy a lifetime of recreational boating without being in a
situation that warrants a Mayday. But, say you
hear a Mayday - what now? There are a lot of
specific steps you, as having heard the call, must take correctly. The
first time you hear the call, the first thing you do is record the location of
the vessel broadcasting the call and stop all of your radio transmissions.
While you are waiting for the second Mayday call, try to figure
out what your distance and heading is to the vessel calling. If
the boat calls Mayday a second time, and you have not heard a Coast
Guard or closer boat respond, then you should set about establishing
contact with the originating vessel. DO NOT ever use the word
"Mayday". Use "Vessel in distress" to
respond, identify yourself and confirm your reception of their location,
determine the nature of their difficulty, tell them where you are, and estimate
for them the time of your arrival at their location. And, there is more to
know. The July issue of SEAWORTHY Magazine has an
excellent article titled "Mayday Protocol" that includes
this information and more regarding what the responding boat should do.
Burn some brain cells on this, especially if you are planning on any
distance sailing on the Bay or bluewater sailing. When someone
calls for help, you may be it! [Seaworthy is a BoatUS
publication, available for the "outrageous price" of $10 per year (800-262-8082,

MURPHY'S LAW: Yrs Truly,
the Racing Beagle, has been doing a lot of the summer moonlight
racing. As crew, I have done all I could to help the cause.
Yep, have bayed at the moon and mooned at the Bay, as
appropriate. /S/ Murphy
the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
