onFishing Bay Yacht Club finished 10th overall out of 24 teams competing in the 2010 NYYC Invitational Cup Qualifying Series in Newport this past week. The team of Travis Weisleder, Rob Whittemore, Lud Kimbrough, and Ben Buhl sailed 26 races in 4 days in Sonars and J22s, making it to the championship round of the final 12. Only the final top three (3) teams received the coveted invitations to the 2011 New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup Regatta; those were Eastern Yacht Club, Annapolis Yacht Club, and Newport Harbor Yacht Club.
FBYC WOLFTRAP. Saturday was a beautify racing day on the southern Bay and those sailing in the annual Fishing Bay Yacht Club Wolftrap race took full advantage. The fleets started just before noon and most were back from the slightly over 23 miles jaunt by mid-to-late afternoon (the last to cross the finish line did so around 1700). RESULTS: PHRF A (6 boats) - 1. Sam Mitchener, Double Eagle; 2.Tom Lakin, Sweet Liberty; 3.Glenn Doncaster, Nanuq. PHRF B (3 boats) - 1.Eric Powers, Nereid; 2.Miles Booth, Shenanigan. One Last Word on the 2010 Stingray Point Regatta. In addition to the fleet winners, who were listed in issue #507 of SBRNYCU, two other trophies were up for grabs: David Alexander (Don't Be Blue, J22)), PHRF C Class, won the Brent Halsey Jr. Memorial Trophy. The Hampton Yacht Club team of Leroi Lissenden, Voodoo2, Dave McConaughy, White Boat, and Dave Alexander, Don't Be Blue combined to win the Potts Trophy.
HYC ANNUAL MIDDLE GROUND LIGHT RACE proves that Middle Ground Light is still there! Thirty (30) boats entered and 30 raced Saturday around a middle distance course in Hampton Roads, the marks for which included Middle Ground Light. So, it can be said that 100% of the boats entered did indeed confirm the location of the lighthouse at the confluence of the James River and Hampton Roads. The PHRF A fleet sailed an 11 mile course while the PHRF B, C, and Non-Spin fleets each did a 7.9 mile course, all proving to be "expert navigators"! If nobody moves the lighthouse, plans are to do the race again in 2011, on the same weekend as the Hampton City festival, Bay Days. RESULTS: PHRF A (4 boats) - 1.Dave Eberwine (Brian McCauley-skipper), SEA STAR; 2.Louie Lewis, INCENTIVE+. PHRF B (7 boats) - 1.Rusty Burshell, COOL CHANGE; 2.Greg Cutter, GREMLIN; 3.Andy Armstrong, VIRGINIA H. PHRF C (7 boats) - Justin Morris, THE HUNTER; 2.Alan Bomar, ROUNDABOUT; 3.Bumps Eberwine, SPRAY. PHRF Non-Spin (12 boats) - 1.Bob Archer, BAD HABIT; 2.Dixon Wilde, KINGFISHER; 3.CT Tiller, BOOGITY. Principal Race Officer - John McCarthy; Scorer - Dick Boykin.
