undisclosed locations - "Shhhhhh.........It was [Butch
Patterson's crew on] Schock Full O' Nuts that gave
Braker a break that day and [Shock Full o' Nuts] did make
the start in plenty of time. (This in ref to a Good Samaritan
tow among fellow racers a couple of weekends ago.)
Try sailing - it's NOT easy! -
Bill Schanen, SAILING
Magazine
Iron skippers and crew in glass boats
battled the elements yesterday in the middle distance race, second day of CCV
Fall Series. Special kudos go to the Black Widow (Leo
Wardrup) team. To get to the race, they sailed the distance from Little
Creek to Hampton Flats in the feisty NE wind blowing in the mid-twenties.
And, of course, there was rain. Another racer reported that he didn't mind
getting wash from the bow while holding the rail down; he claimed "the Bay
water was a lot warmer than the air or the rain." RESULTS:
PHRF A (5 boats) - 1.Brian McCauley (for Dave
Eberwine), Sea Star; 2.John Blais,
Stardancer; 3.Leroi Lissenden, Voodoo
2. PHRF B (8 boats) - 1. David
McConaughy, Cool Change; 2.Rusty
Burshell, Cool Change; 3.Bob Archer,
Bad Habit. PHRF C (6 boats) - 1.Alan
Bomar, Roundabout; 2.Brendan
Drinkwater, Number Two;
3.Michael Klopf, Swamp Rat. PHRF
Non-Spinnaker (5 boats) - 1.Leo Wardrup, Black
Widow; 2.Andy Armstrong, Virginia
H.; 3.Dixon Wilde, Kingfisher.
Principal Race Officer - John McCarthy along with Buk Lawrence, Dick Boykin,
Eric Matherne, and John Ritter, all of whom braved elements that don't begin to
compare with the Sunday morning sports section and a second cup of
coffee. CCV final Fall Series and 2010 races are set for Sunday,
October 10. Two races, drop mark courses in Hampton Roads
harbor. Same time - same bat channel. For info contact John
McCarthy at (757) 850-4225.
AQUARIUS, Michael Tate, won the HYC Annual
Singlehand Race against 9 other competitors in a sporty breeze Sunday
before this past around Hampton Bar. Mike made the trip in a little
over one and one-half hours. Nibbling at Aquarius'
stern were second place finisher, Brendan Drinkwater,
Number Two, and Bill Ripley's
Obsession. Race Chairman: Marshall Findley
Samba Pa Ti, the TP 52 that starred in the movie
Morning Light, is now a member of the US Naval Academy Offshore
fleet and sails as Invictus.
Schooner Virginia

coming! They gather at the Fells Point (Baltimore) dockside on
Wednesday, October 13, and start down the Bay to Hampton Roads on Thursday,
October 14th. The finish lines (depending on which fleet) are at
Thimble Shoal Light and, for the smaller schooners, Windmill Point. From
the finish, the graceful vessels proceed to Portsmouth to dock. Some of
the schooners will be open for tours on Saturday, October 16.
Southern Bay clubs, Broad Bay Sailing Association, Portsmouth Boat Club, and
Town Point Yacht Club are key players in the event, along with Fells Point
Yacht Club in Maryland. If you are on the water during their arrival, you
are in for a treat.
MURPHY'S LAW: Wow! At
Screwpile next year, racers who are staying at the regatta headquarters hotel
(Holiday Inn Select) will be able to order lunches for the coming race day and,
get this, the lunches will be delivered to their rooms in the morning before
they leave for the boat. Now that's room
service! /S/
