Well worth noting  is the US SAILING announcement recognizing the southern Bay's Fishing Bay Yacht Club as a recipient of the One-Design Regatta Award,  one of only three One-Design national awards given each year.  US SAILING said,  "...Fishing Bay Yacht Club (FBYC) of Deltaville, Va. won the 2010 Regatta Award for the excellence in development, promotion, and management performed by organizers and sponsors of the 2010 USODA (United States Optimist Dinghy Association) Layline Nationals on July 17-25, 2010.  Co-chairs Noel Clinard and Jay Buhl, along with webmaster Jon Deutsch were recognized for demonstrating extraordinary individual creativity and contribution to the year’s most innovative one-design event of national significance. The regatta attracted broad national and international participation of 317 boats through persistent marketing and communication efforts. The small club located in a village maximized their resources through their entrepreneurial promotions, sponsorship development, community involvement, shore activities and creative dissemination of housing, tourism, historical and racing information."  Amen to all of that!

FROSTBITE Race #4 sailors had beautiful conditions -  sunny, not too cool, and just the right amount of  "pile in the carpet".  The fleets raced between 9 and 11 miles around fixed marks  in Hampton Roads harbor.  So, it was yet another pretty darn good day for Frostbite racing.  RESULTS:  PHRF A (8 boats):  1.Christian Schaumloffel, Mirage;  2.Phil Briggs, Feather;  3.John Blais, Stardancer.   PHRF B (8 boats):  1.Rusty Burshell, Cool Change;  2.Graham Field, Independence;  3.David Taylor, Wham Bam.   PHRF C (6 boats):  1.Alan Bomar, Roundabout;  2.Bumps Eberwine, Spray;  3.Michael Tate, Aquarius.   PHRF Non-Spin (2 boats):  1.Dave Lively, Lively Lady.  Principal Race Officer, Dick Boykin;  Signal Boat, Brian Deibler.    The final race of the series, Frostbite Race 5 -  Sunday, November 28th - same time, same place, same format!   For info please contact Dick Boykin at (757) 890-0093.

From the 2010 Caribbean 1500 website.  "Tuesday, November 16
Update: Noon ---- Steve Black has been notified by the Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association (BASRA) today that “the conditions are not favorable for finding Laura Zekoll
[age 46, Atlanta]  alive.” The search and rescue mission involving the US Coast Guard, the Bahamas Defense Force, BASRA, and local efforts since Saturday night has resulted in “no findings.”  The US Coast Guard has suspended its activity.  The BDF will suspend its activity today. BASRA will continue aerial surveys of the vessel and area. Our thoughts and prayers are with Laura's friends and family as well as the crew of Rule 62."    Rule 62, Jeanneau 46DS, owned by Richard and Debra Ross, was part of a fleet of 65 that departed Hampton, VA, on November 8, 2010, in route to the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. On Saturday, in heavy conditions, Rule 62 diverted to the Bahamas.  It is reported that Rule 62 hit a reef off  Avaco Island.  The four on board launched the lifeboat in an attempt to get to shore.  The lifeboat did not sustain them.  In the water, Laura became separated for the other three, who eventually washed ashore alive.    Additional information available at the Caribbean 1500 site, www.carib1500.com

Would you rather be towed or salvaged?  BoatUS Magazine, December 2010 issue, "Making Sense of Towing vs Salvage", page 62, offers a good explanation of salvage situations.  "A towing service provides towing and light ungroundings, boat insurance polices cover salvage,"  the article begins.  There are important nuances, the discussion and definition of "imminent peril" an important one, and the article covers them.  And, best of all, there are examples of  salvage and not salvage incidents.  Good info to be noodling during the off season.

Southern Bay racer/tactician/navigator, Mark Wheeler, did all but one of the races that Dick Oland's Vela Veloce, custom 52, completed on her way to winning the 2010 Gulf Stream Series.  Vela Veloce won the  Championship for East Coast Big Boat Racing over 133 other competitors.   Well. . . that's what happens, Mr. Oland, when you have southern Bay talent onboard! :)   NOTE: The series events run from January through November each year. The championship is awarded by the US-IRC Foundation.

High School Racing Update:  Last weekend several southern Bay high school teams were in Tom's River, NJ,  for the Interscholastic Atlantic Coast Championships.  18 Teams from Savannah, GA, to Marblehead, MA, including 4 from Virginia.   Christ Church won and Norfolk Collegiate finished in second place.  Norfolk Academy was 10th and 2 points back was Walsingham finished 12th.   This weekend the action moved to New Orleans where Walsingham Academy (Williamsburg) finished 13th among the 33 high school teams competing in the Great Oaks Regatta at Southern Yacht Club.

MURPHY'S LAW:   This is fair warning, Dear Readers.  After Thanksgiving dinner, it is not likely you will mistake Yrs Truly, the Racing Beagle, for an action figure!   Good gobbles to you all!    /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
