This coming Sunday,  March 13th,  DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME BEGINS (at 0200, 2am)!  You give up one hour of sleep so you can spend more waking moments in the daylight!

STREGA, the S2 that  Neil Garrett raced for many years prior to his passing in 2010, has a new owner and a new home.  Jerry Latell, who is Ullman Sails in Deltaville-Irvington, is Strega's new owner.  Sunday a week ago Jerry moved her to her new home in Deltaville.  Jerry will be fulfilling racing commitments he has with other boats at larger regattas (including SBRW), but expects to race Strega in various regattas near his home during the coming season.

J105 is the first one-design class to make for Southern Bay Race Week 2011.   There are already five J105 entries for SBRW 2011, the minimum required to assure a one design fleet.  Leading the way for their fleet are David Clark, Corryvreckan, Richard Payne, Flying Colors, Strother Scott, Loose Cannon, Mike Karn, Inevitable, and Marty Hublitz and Eddie Hornick, Veloce.  Y'all come racingwww.blacksealcup.com
There are plenty of southern Bay junior sailors who did well racing on the Bay in 2010.  Three in particular captured first place in season long CBYRA standings:  Alexander Hanna, sailing for Fishing Bay Yacht Club,  finished first overall in Optimist, and first in the Opti Red Fleet.  Alex Jacob, Fishing Bay Yacht Club, finished first in Laser Radials,  and Kendall Swenson, Fishing Bay Yacht Club, was first in Optimist Girls.  KUDOS to all three.

Tomorrow is the anniversary of the BATTLE OF HAMPTON ROADS - March 8, 1862.  This famous battle took place in the very waters most Southern Bay racers have raced in, swum through,  paraded over, or, at least, traversed during their own time.  Think about it.

To Fiddler's GreenRonald  Dooley, 63, passed from us unexpectedly last week.  A resident of Portsmouth,  Ronnie raced on a number of southern Bay boats, including Sea Star.  A racing friend expressed the regard in which Ronnie was held:   "Ronnie ("Dooley Man") was a dear, good friend who had an amazing way of making you feel special and at ease; he never spoke badly of anyone and ALWAYS, ALWAYS was such a pleasure to be around.  We shall miss him more than words can say! "

It's a new Farr400 being built in Dubai.  That is the replacement racing platform that is on it's way to Sledd Shelhorse and the crew of Meridian 2.  Meridian 2 will be doing Down the Bay and SBRW 2011 while the  all carbon Farr 40 footer is being completed and shipped.  Needless to say,  it's arrival will mark the beginning of new horizons for this special group of southern Bay racers.

CBYRA REGION 4  high point awards, including the LaBrot Trophy presentation to Sea Star (David Eberwine and crew), will be made on Sunday, March 13th, 4:00pm at the Hampton Yacht Club Dockside Lounge.  Nibbies and cash bar.  For information contact Randy Pugh, CBYRA VP for Region 4,  at (757)301-2858.

MORC?  Rumors stir interest in the class rebirth.   Rumblings around the internet and some on the docks around the southern Bay have caused some head scratching and chin rubbing.  MORC, the MIDGET OCEAN RACING CLUB, at one time had a presence on the southern Chesapeake Bay (Station #16 and Station #70 ).  MORC came into being in 1954 on the Long Island Sound.  It was a club that used a measuring system of handicapping boats up to just under 30 feet; they sailed in the MORC fleet/class.  At one time MORC enjoyed a coast-to-coast presence and beyond into Canada.  There are a number of racers on the southern Bay who raced and held office in the MORC organization:  Mike Karn, Elizabeth Peabody, Ben Weeks, Roy Tate, Bill Spencer, Roger French,  and Bob Kates, to name only a few.  Now,  Don Deloatch Stingrayracing1@yahoo.com or 757-285-0929  and Dave Taylor (757) 344-5292  are stepping up to explore the interest in this area regarding being part of a rebirth of the MORC class.  If you think you may be interested in attending a gathering later this month to noodle and chew over the topic, please let Don or Dave know.

SBRW 2011 Fleet UpdatePhil Briggs' J36,  Feather, returns to SBRW 2011 in PHRF A and Greg Cutter is bringing Gremlin to sail in the Elliott 770 one-design fleet or PHRF B.  And, entered in the newly designed SBRW Cruising Fleet is John Moore's CS 36, Lamour.  www.blacksealcup.com

The collegiate racers are out there!  Sixteen (16) "institutions of  higher learning" had varsity sailing teams on the water this past weekend at the Old Dominion Open, hosted by Old Dominion University in Norfolk.  The host team finished 2nd behind Georgetown, and from the southern Bay area, UVA was 6th, and Hampton University was 8th.  Just missing the top 10, Christopher Newport University finished in 11th place ahead of  University of Maryland, Salisbury, Drexel, William and Mary, and Princeton in that order.

A Spectator Boat for the CNU Icefree Regatta. March 12-13.  George Tatum from James River Marina is going to have a 43 foot house boat on the water for the CNU Icefree Regatta on March 12th and 13th. This will be a great opportunity to see the CNU team and a college regatta up close.  If you plan to "spectate"  this wonderful  regatta, please let Coach Dan Winters know in advance - like now!  cnusailing@aol.com

BB&T Wealth Management Division has joined  SBRW 2011 as a key sponsor of the event.  The sponsors that support SBRW 2011 are a large part of the effort of event officials to keep cost down for the racers while providing  a first class, racer-friendly regatta.  By the way,  one of BB&T's good guys is a southern Bay racer - Justin Morris races his Hunter 26.5, THE HUNTER, in just about every meaningful event in the area.
