Tragedy on the
James River. Two sailors who often raced on Christian
Schaumloffel's Hobie 33, Mirage, died May 13th when their 22ft sailboat
capsized in the James River in the early morning that day (around 0100
hours). Tyler Lorenzi (23) died at 11am in Riverside Regional Medical Center of
hypothermia. Alex Brown (24) the owner of the boat
couldn’t be kept afloat while the several of the crew were treading water for
3-5 hours and is now missing. The accident happened in the vicinity of the
mouth of the Pagan River. Eight others survived. The losses of life
are especially overwhelming to all who knew or knew of Tyler and
Alex. Gone from us too soon.

RACERS AND THE RULES QUIZ: Last week
we said that the Right-of-Way rules begin to apply when boats are
sailing in or near the racing area with the intent of racing. So, when may
a boat be penalized for breaking one of the Right-of-Way
rules? (Answer follows in this issue of
SBRNYCU.)

Collegiate Sailing: Christopher Newport
University Sailing Team wrapped up their season in fine form - FIRST PLACE
in the Jeremy A. Pinkerton Memorial Regatta hosted by the University of
Maryland at Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis weekend before this
past. CNU
posted an impressive
win over Maryland and Ocean County in a 22 race series that was run on the
“Arrigan” format - puts both A and B division teams into the same fleet. It
means racers sailed in a six boat fleet and both divisions sailed all the time
in every race. CNU won the event and both divisions, all by a considerable
margin. CNU sailors actually won 14 of the 22 races. Every skipper won at least
two races. CNU head coach is Dan Winters.
Word from a
reliable, very reliable, source is that the Hobie 33, TREATY OF
GHENT, is for sale. Racers interested in TOG may get details by
contacting Will Roberts at 757-617-5084.
Rob Overton, well known US Sailing
rules guru, sailed in the Laser Area C Eliminations this past weekend (see item
above). Lately, Rob and his wife Andi have been back and
forth from their current base in the Caribbean while Rob pursues a strong
interest in high school sailing (especially team racing), in particular.
He will be umpiring at the Baker Cup competition this coming weekend, hosted by
Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.
Navy Sailing Center (Naval Station
Norfolk) started weekly TUESDAY evening dinghy regattas and BBQs last
week. Going to TUESDAY is a big change based on popular requests.
Now there is no conflict with the Big Boat Wednesday races. So....big
boaters have no excuses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Patrick, Kate and the
rest of the team (now including Brendan
Drinkwater) have gotten many upgrades done to the boats over the winter
and the center has added 6 brand spanking new 420's!!! Racing is in
Norfolk's Willoughby Bay - aka Little Bay. For info contact Leon

The World Cruising Club's Atlantic Cup
fleet has completed the first leg of their journey to the US. After
four days of 15-20 knot headwinds, the fleet arrived in Bermuda and celebrated
at an Awards Ceremony at the St. George's Sport and Dinghy Club on May 8.
The Atlantic Cup is the World Cruising Club's fun sailboat rally from the
Caribbean to the US with a stop in
Bermuda. The first leg of the
rally form Nanny Cay in Tortola to St. George's Harbour in Bermuda was 850 nm
and took the fleet an unusually long 5-6 days. Steve
Black, well known in the southern Bay for his creation and, until
recently, management of the Caribbean 1500 and other bluewater events, won the
casual competition in his Pacer 42,
Madrugada. Some boats choose to sail under a World Cruising Club handicap, which
provides an element of fun competition while still allowing the boats to motor
if necessary. Steve will be racing in the Down the Bay Race for
the Virginia Cruising Cup which starts in Annapolis on Friday, May 27th
and finishes in Hampton on Saturday, May 28th (hopefully!).
This coming weekend:
Saturday, May 21 - Rappahannock River Yacht Club Spring
Regatta.
Sunday, May 22 - Fishing Bay Yacht Club Spring Series
continues.
DOWN THE BAY RACE -
CHECK-IN at Annapolis Yacht Club 1500 - 1800 on Thursday, May
26. The check-in location has indeed bounced back and forth, AYC to
EYC to AYC, as plans have changed during the pre-season and things
happened. However, the NOR on the website does correctly indicate AYC
as the location for check-in (1500-1800) and the pre-race party
(1800-2000). This has been confirmed by event co-chair Graham
Garrenton (757) 478-2994. The post race party and awards
presentation is at Hampton Yacht Club, Saturday, May 28, 1930 (7:30
pm) DTB accepts entries
(late fee applies) until May 25, 2011. For on line entry and info go to www.hamptonyc.com
and click on the DTB
logo.
VIMS Benefit Event - a Poker Run for paddle
boats, dinghies, jet skis and other motor craft. Saturday, June
18 - 0900 through 1500 - at Salt Ponds Marina (Hampton). If you want to
play and help the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, contact
Bill Walsh at 800-55404581 or 757-880-8820.
Answer to RR Quiz Question: A boat not
racing shall not be penalized for breaking a Part 2 rule (When Boats
Meet); therefore, boats may be penalized when they begin racing (i.e.
at their preparatory signal). HOWEVER, a boat that is not racing may be
penalized (DSQ), if she fouls a boat that is racing. So, beware of getting
in the way of boats that are racing.
MURPHY'S LAW: The "Pot Luck Supper"
that precedes the awards presentation for the Cape Henry Cup is one of
Yrs Truly, the Racing Beagle's very favorite style of awards
presentations. Casual food and drink, but very fancy silverware.
That Cape Henry Cup can hold a lot of rum soaked milk
bones! /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing
spirit in us all.
