AFTERTHOUGHT,  GOIN’,  SCHIEHALLION, and  LAST BOAT III  take firsts in fleets for Cut Channel Race.  It was a wild and wooly 28 mile long race Saturday.  Boats reported winds mostly at 20 knots and seas at 3-4 feet.   The Cut Channel is the first race of the Fishing Bay Yacht Club Long Distance Series.  Fifteen (15) hearty skippers and crew ventured out,  Results: PHRF A (4 boats): 1.Craig Wright, Afterthought; 2.Catherine Clark, Corryvreckan.  PHRF B (6 boats): 1.Dennis Hannick, Goin’; 2.Bob Fleck, Mad Hatter; 3.Miles Booth, Shenanigan.  PHRF C (3 boats): 1.Brad Miller, Schiehallion; 2.Russ Collins, Morningtide.  PHRF Non-Spinnaker (2 boats): 1.Frank Murphy, Last Boat III.  Race Chairman – Noel Clinard

14^th ANNUAL SOUTHERN CHESAPEAKE LEUKEMIA CUP REGATTA – July 6 -8 – supported by and for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. There is PHRF racing, one-design racing and provision for a large contingent of Classic and Cruising Class boats to race. 25th Annual C. I. Race -  There was wind, there was sunshine, and there were 78 boats filled with skippers and crew who actually raced, and, what’s more,  73 finished.  The northeast breeze in the mid to high teens provided great conditions for this race out the Elizabeth River and back to the finish line at the Portsmouth seawall.  Historically, there is a dearth of wind for this event, although not so much since the date changed to mid-June.  This, of course, is the event usually billed as the party interrupted by a race.  Friday night was check-in (more than 100 entries were received) and party.  Saturday night was awards and party.  All good.  No records are kept on who won the parties, but here are the top finishers in the fleets:  Spinnaker A (4 boats): 1.Martin Casey, Bow Down; 2.Bob Mosby, Cyrano.   Spinnaker B (8 boats): 1.Harry Tenney, Margarita; 2.Graham Field, Independence; 3.Brendan Savage, Tantrum.   Spinnaker C (8 boats): 1.Steve Ritz, Excelsior; 2.Kevin Baum, Paramour; 3.John Wandling, Eclipse.   Non-Spinnaker 1 (8 boats): 1.Leo Wardrup, Black Widow; 2.Walter Boatwright, Puff Card; 3.Larry Baun, Baserunner.   Non-Spinnaker 2 (7 boats): 1.Bill Ripley, Obsession; 2.MD Riley, Turbo’s Tub; 3.Joe Butterfield, Yorgo’s Express.   Cruising 1 (11 boats): 1.Larry Bryant, Whisper; 2.Doug Creecy, Zing; 3.Tempo.   Cru 2 (14 boats): 1.Ken Nichols, St. Somewhere; 2.David Washbourne, Valcour; 3.Tom Edwards, Finns.   Cru 3 (8 boats): 1.Doug Fohl, Whistler; 2.Bill Northington, Breezin’ Up; 3.Doug Ellis, Seaquest.   Cru 4 (10 boats) 1.Roy Weisert, Arete; 2.Don Wade, Tom Cat; 3.Ronnie Triplett, Sundrop.  Principal Race Officer – John Ritter.

SPLC update:  Avoid late fee, enter by June 30.  www.splc.us  The Southern Bay Racers Brigade is forming for the trip up the Bay to Solomons, Maryland, for the SCREWPILE LIGHT HOUSE CHALLENGE  (Racing July 15-17).  Early on there are  equal numbers of boats from Hampton Yacht Club and Fishing Bay Yacht Club.    Pat & Jake Brodersen will bring their C&C 35, Midnight Mistress (think red crew shirts), Leroi Lissenden will be there in his classically classy Tripp 38,  Voodoo 2, and Sledd Shelhorse will race his Farr 400, Meridian X – all sail out of Hampton YC.  From Fishing Bay YC come Sam Mitchener in his J109, Double Eagle, Dennis Hannick in his Tripp 26, Goin’, and Miles Booth in his Tartan 10, Shenanigan.   Dave Wilbar, will be racing Special K (J105) from Broad Bay Sailing Association. June 23 Saturday THE HANBURY CUP – sponsored by the Christopher Newport Sailing Foundation for the benefit of the Euclid Hanbury Sailing Team at Christopher Newport University. Skippers Meeting is at 2:30pm at Hampton Yacht Club. First warning is at 3:30pm. PHRF A, B, and C fleets will compete for the Hanbury Cup; the Captain’s Cup will be awarded to the winner of the Collegiate Division. Entries are due by JUNE 20^th. June 24  Sunday the Wolcott Memorial Regatta is at Norfolk Yacht & Country Club. This regatta is named for Edward W. Wolcott, who held multiple HOD National Championship titles, and who is roundly recognized as having been a benefactor to sailing and to the community. Hampton One-Design and Flying Juniors are invited to race.  The Skipper’s meeting is at 9:45, first gun at 11:00. When the tornado hit Hampton Yacht Club, SBRW 2012 regatta headquarters, on Friday, June 1, it took away the big party tent AND all the vendor and sponsor banners in the tent.  One of the sailmakers (Baxter Sailmakers in Norfolk) reported that his banner has been found  “. . . 1 ½  blocks away under a truck that had $10,000 of damage.”  Let’s hope the truck owner does not blame the sailmaker’s banner for any of that damage!!

A phone call came from a SBRNYCU reader and  long time friend who spends his days (and probably lots of nights) concerned about the Coast Guard Aids to Navigations program (ATON). Think sea buoys, day marks, nuns, lighthouses, lights,  bells, whistles, gongs, etc.  His nightmares most likely include an ocean full of these creatures, all silently moving toward shoals and beaches.  He chuckled and said, “I see there’s a Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge, and I just want to say, ‘There certainly is . . . .[a challenge]!’  Screwpile lighthouses are not easy to maintain by any means.

From the Old Dominion University Alumni e-news (June 2012) comes an update on two ODU sailing team grads who are all set for the Olympics.  Anna Tunnicliffe and Debbie Capozzi, along with crewmate Molly Vandemoer, will be sailing on the US Olympic Team, representing the USA in the  Women’s Match Racing competition. 

Please note: Page 84 of the 2012 CCV Racing Guide contains an erroneous statement as to Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup  “Proceeds [being] donated to Wounded Warrior Project” .  The error occurred during CCV publication procedures.  While most certainly agree the WWP is a very worthy endeavor, the Leukemia Cup Regatta is for LLS research, education, and support of patients and families battling blood cancers.

MURPHY'S LAW: This past weekend has been very WINDY on the southern Chesapeake.  Yrs Truly, the Racing Beagle, would call it a not-so-bad, 3 day nor’easter.  There were some “equipment failures” on the race courses, for example, it was reported that one mast came down during the C I Race, and negotiating starting lines was a bit dicey for some.  Speaking of “equipment failures”, the Murphster has an appointment for a nip-and-tuck procedure – the wind stretched the beautiful beagle ears to where they are a trip hazard.
