on“Mad Dogs and Englishmen [and sailboat racers] go out in the mid day sun”, or words to that effect, and seventy (70), some meeting overlapping criteria, went out on a sizzling race course off Stingray Point both days this past weekend for a very good cause – the 14th Annual Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta. The event was two days of racing and additional days of shore side happenings, including a Friday evening special “Meet and Mingle” with Gary Jobson, National Chair of The Leukemia Cup Regatta. The record setting heat conditions required some chutzpah on the part of the racers and some creativity on the part of race officials. Nevertheless, each of the fleets got in 3 races and was off the water before becoming crispy critters. RESULTS: J105 (6 boats) – 1.Mike Karn, Inevitable ( 2-1-3); 2.Strother Scott, Loose Cannon (1-7-2); 3.David Clark, Corryvreckan (4-2-4). J24 (6 boats) – 1.Alan Bomar, roundabout (4-2-1); 2.Neil Ford, Rocket J ( 2-3-2); 3.Hunter Davidson, Grey Ghost ( 3-4-3). PHRF A (6 boats) – 1.Craig Wright, Afterthought ( 1-1-1); 2.Sam Mitchener, Double Eagle ( 2-2-3); 3.Leroi Lissenden, Voodoo 2 ( 3-3-2). PHRF B (7 boats) – 1.Bob & Lisa Fleck, Mad Hatter ( 1-2-1); 2.Jerry Latell, Chupacabra ( 3-1-2); 3.David Hinckle, Elancer ( 2-3-5). PHRF C (6 boats) – 1.Matt Braun, Prophet ( 1-2-1); 2.Sam Marshall, Play It Again (2-1-5); 3.Paul Wash, Cheeky Monkey ( 5-3-2). PHRF NON_SPIN (5 boats) – 1.John Blais, Stardancer ( 1-1-1); 2.Tony Thornton, T.L. Sea (2-4-2; 3.Doug Anderson, Red Sky ( 3-2-3). PHRF and One-Design Principal Race Officer – Brooks Zerkel. CLASSIC (10 boats) – 1.Frank Murphy, Last Boat III ( 1-1-1); 2.Deidre McSweeney-Tyson, Curlew III ( 2-2-3); 3.Dick Cole, Nutcracker ( 3-4-2). CRUISING 1 (13 boats) – 1.Steven Bland, Osprey ( 1-1-1); 2.Team Alcyone, Alcyone ( 3-2-2); 3.Jere Dennison, Mojito ( 2-3-4). CRUISING 2 (11 boats) – 1.Robert A. Smith, Summerest ( 2-2-1); 2.Eddie Fraher, Hedys II ( 1-1-4); 3.George Burke, Reveille ( 4-5-3). CLASSIC and CRUISING Principal race Officer – Lud Kimbrough.
The Leukemia Cup is one of those events where a whole lot of people help pull it off. One of the racers, Paul Wash, not only raced, but did the official scoring for the event. Even with all the lead up and on going duties scoring such an event entails, Paul brought Cheeky Monkey in 3rd in the PHRF C fleet. Now, that’s cheeky!

It took a lot of folks to make OPSAIL the event that it was and three key folks came from among the ranks of involved Southern Bay racers. Tim Leighton organized and led hundreds of small boats in parade order for the 20+ mile long June 8th official opening parade. Dave Bennett was parade commander for two OPSAIL parades, the June 6th Naval Sea and Air parade and the June 12th Parade up the Bay. It was a truly fluid situation as boats joined and left the procession up the Bay. And, all the boaters who docked in the downtown Norfolk Wisconsin basin owe Eric Matherne a tip of the cap. Eric’s engineering CAD expertise created over 3200 feet of boats safe and comfortable dockage on a single 575 foot pier. The epitome of patience, Eric developed 6 renditions for the project.

BOLINAO 52 - FREE at THE MARINERS’ MUSEUM on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 - 7:00 p.m. Film screening and talk with Director Duc Nguyen. Following the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese fled their homeland. Known as “Boat People,” the refugees risked their lives on the perilous escape across the South China Sea. Often departing via boats not intended for navigating open waters, many died of drowning or starvation and thirst. Others were lost at sea while some were pillaged by pirates. On Wednesday, July 11, Director Duc Nguyen – himself a Boat Person – will screen and discuss, Bolinao 52, a Regional Emmy award-winning documentary film on this extraordinary story. Thanks to the generosity of the Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia, lectures in the Museum summer series are free to everyone. Reserved seating is offered for TMM Members only. Members are encouraged to call (757) 591-7751 or e-mail lectures@MarinersMuseum.org for seats.

MURPHY'S LAW: It occurs to Yrs Truly, the Racing Beagle, that the phrase “grillin’ some dogs” took on new meaning this past weekend, especially on the race courses. And, so did “HOT dawg”! Ahh-ooooooh! /S/ Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
