This week our own Austin Powers was named the 2017 Robert Purrington Award recipient for the Mid-Atlantic Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association. Austin is a senior at Christopher Newport University, and sailed all four of his years at the school on the varsity sailing team. He served as co-captain for three of those years. The award is given to “recognize a graduating senior from the conference who has made outstanding contributions to college sailing”. For those who do not know Austin, he literally grew up at FBYC, crewing on his parents’ boats on club cruises and races from the time he was an infant. He attended, and later coached, both Opti Kids and Junior Week; and sailed on both the Opti and Laser Race Teams. After aging out as a junior, Austin coached our Opti Development Team for three years. In addition to racing for CNU, Austin currently campaigns a Tartan Ten, Blew By You, in the club’s offshore division.
Austin is one of five FBYC junior program graduates who are currently sailing at the college level; a sixth is a professional collegiate coach.
Congratulations, Austin!
