Racers rally for regatta to find no wind in their sails
Not only was there no race-able wind, there was no wind at all. That made it a slow start for the inaugural Cape Dory Typhoon National Regatta last weekend on the Rappahannock River near Carters Creek.

The event sponsored by the Rappahannock River Yacht Club featured 32 typhoons, 19 in the Championship Fleet and 13 in the Corinthian Fleet. The regatta was constructed as a one-design, non-spinnaker race for Weekender, Daysailer and Open Typhoons.
Though three races were scheduled for Saturday, the fleet was forced to dock in Carters Creek due to no wind. The fleet was able to get in one race on Sunday morning.
Event chairman Ron Mihills won the 2011 Typhoon National Champion title aboard Anthem while Gary Hooper placed second and Norm Smith took third. In the Corinthian fleet, John Friday took first place, followed by Bill Turenne in second and Lance Franke in third.
Mihills, Hooper and Smith also took the top three rankings in the combined Corinthian and Championship fleets.
Doug Dorsey, skipper of Autumn Leaves, came in fourth overall followed by fellow Championship fleet members Tom Watkins on Dolce, Tom Richardson on Tea Cup, Ed Zakaib on MariPerry, Chuck Carmichael on Creampuff, Sissy Crowther on Ad Astra, Ron Pugh on Therapy, Stan Crockett on Miss Daisy and Ned Crockett on Lady Bug.
Friday of the Corinthian class took 13th place aboard Fridays Child followed by Steve Harris on Sierra Rose in the Championship fleet, Turenne on Patriot in the Corinthian fleet, Chris Ehring on Cricket in the Championship fleet and Franke in the Corinthian fleet.
Skipper Bill Young on Nadia landed in the time limit expired category along with fellow Championship fleet members Bo Bragg on the Camilleon, Dave Raffetto on Dea Latis, Frank Birdsall on Kimm and Walker Stevens on Puffin.
Members of the Corinthian fleet in the time limit expired category include Johanna Carrington on Lobster Girl, Jerry Wachter on Quetzel and Jack McKim on Right.
Ray Britt, Diane Cook-Tench aboard the Adventure and Pep Fuller on the Miswhit, all of the Corinthian fleet, did not finish.
Jim Hatch, Championship skipper of Jack Daniel, did not start nor did Corinthian skippers Christine Ulrich on the Bluebonnet or Don McClean on the Aeolus.
