On behalf of our team, we'd like to offer a huge THANK YOU to our Campaign Head, Noel Clinard.
Over the past three weeks he has rigged and derigged his Sonar 'Prophet' three times; logged thousands of miles driving/towing from Deltaville to Falmouth, MA to Rochester, NY back to Deltaville, back to Rochester and then home again to Richmond. Along the way he also served on race committee for the New England Champs and spent 9 nights in hotels away from his family in support of our Team.
We truly can't thank you enough for all of your time, effort and contributions to the campaign. THANK YOU NOEL!!!
The FBYC Team for the New York Yacht Club Qualifying Series continued its training for the newport event by sailing in the rigorous competition with Sonar veterans at the Sonar North American Championship at RYC in Rochester, New York. Photos of the competitors can be seen here.

The New York Yacht Club has posted the Sailing Instructions for its 2012 US Qualifying Series, which will take place September 4-8 at NYYC's Harbour Court in Newport, Rhode Island. They provide an detailed and interesting perspective on the management of a multi-fleet (Sonars and J70s) regatta in an amateur Corinthian setting. Plans are underway with North Point Yacht Sales of Annapolis for a J70 demo at FBYC on May 19 and 20, during OD and Offshore racing. Anyone curious about the new J Boat will be given a ride. The FBYC RIB will be used to shuttle sailors to the J70, before, during, between or after racing. In addition, Team FBYC, preparing to race J70s in the NYYC USQS, will get some “time in the boat.” Lud Kimbrough will be the on-site coordinator for the demo program. Watch this space for details and email Noel Clinard now saying, “I want a ride!” See “Read More” below for more exciting news on the J70 racing circuit in 2013.
Here is yet another J70 Review and Video. This one by Dave Reed of Sailing World is the most comprehensive to date, reviewing crew weight, position, deck layout, etc. and discussing plans for the roll out of the boats, including the NYYC USQS.
Check out some video of the newly launched J70 that will be used for the NYYC Invitational Cup Qualifying Series that FBYC will be sending a team to. Here is Jeff Johnstone narrating the continuing sea trials of new J70 in New England.
FBYC's Team will sail half the races, and, hopefully, all of the finals of the NYYC USQS, in the new J/70. The J/70 (22.75 feet) is J/Boats' first ramp-launchable keelboat - designed to fulfill the growing need for an easy-to-own, high performance one-design that is exciting to sail, stable enough sailboat for the family and built to last.
A J/70 is on order by an FBYC member for delivery this summer for the FBYC Team's use. In the last week several sailmakers have sea trialed the J/70 in Narragansett Bay.

As in 2010, we are conducting a fund raising campaign to defray the expenses beyond the entry fee and those expenses paid by the individual sailors. Last time, the campaign was supported generously by substantial gifts by FBYC members who were also members of NYYC, by the individual sailing participants and their families, and by several other members who simply wished to support this prestigious endeavor. We hope these and many other members will be generous again this year.
Recent issues of the Log have reported on FBYC’s invitation and decision to participate in the 2012 New York Yacht Club Qualifying Series in September. As Coordinator of the Campaign, I would like to express our gratitude to …
The New York Yacht Club has invited FBYC to compete in the 2012 U.S. Qualifying Series (“USQS”) for the 2013 Invitational Cup (“IC”). This is the second time we have been invited to this premiere event. In 2010, the Club Team of Travis Weisleder, Rob Whittemore, Lud Kimbrough and Ben Buhl brought us honor by finishing in the top ten finalist round of the USQS. It is an extraordinary recognition of FBYC for us to be re-invited to the most prestigious event in amateur Corinthian yachting.
The USQS will continue the format in which U.S. teams compete in two fleets of one-design keelboats, as they vie to be one of only three domestic yacht clubs to compete in …
