Thursday September 30, 2004 09:51AM
onThis past weekend the College of Charleston hosted the SAISA District Singlehanded Qualifiers. Of the thirteen boat fleet, the Cougars sailed Jose Fuentes (AYC), Chris Lash, Patrick Wilson (CYA), and Blake Kimbrough.
The Cougars also had a team in Boston at the Hood Tropghy hosted by Tufts on the ever shifty Mystic Lake. Alana O'reilly and Susan Lintern sailed A-Division, while Jesse Combs and Hunter Stunzi sailed B-Division.
The singlehanded qualifiers had variable breeze in the morning between 5 and 12 knts, accompanied by calm seas. At the conclusion of the first four races, Blake Kimbrough of the Cougars had a strong lead by nine points, follwed by Chris Lash and Jose Fuentes.
After lunch, Tropical Depression Jeanne showed us her wrath. The last five races were sailed in a steady 25 knts, aided by powerful gusts of up to 35 knts. These breezes saw five boats drop out of the regatta, leaveing eight to duke it out for the two coveted births to the nationals. By the end of the day it was made apparent who the Laser sailors were, and who were'nt.
The end results saw Eckerd College's Peter Stanton taking the victory, followed closely by Jose Fuentes (CofC) in second, Eckerd in third, Patrick Wilson (CofC) in fourth, Blake Kimbrough (CofC) fifth, (South Florida) sixth, Chris Lash (CofC) seventh, and (Eckerd) eighth.
Congratulations to Peter Stanton and Jose Fuentes in qualifying for the 2004/2005 Singlhanded Nationals.
