onFishing Bay Yacht Club is among the top 12 teams that have qualified for the Championship Series at the 2010 NYYC Invitational Cup Qualifying Series. After completing fourteen races in 2 days in both Sonars and J22s, the team advances on to two days of championship racing on Thursday and Friday in Sonars at New York Yacht Club in Newport.
The team began the day sailing the J22 with a bullet in the first race. They followed that with a 6 and a 2 before switching to the Sonar for the final 3 races. After posting solid mid-fleet finishes with one race left, the team had an 8 point cushion for making it into the championship fleet.
In the final race of the day the FBYC had a great start. In fact it was too good. They were OCS and had to return to the starting line to clear themselves. While the rest of the fleet sailed on starboard to the left side the course, the FBYC boat headed out on port to the right. 4 legs later the team of Travis Weisleder, Rob Whittemore, Lud Kimbrough and Ben Buhl clawed their way back to a 9th place finish.
Indian Harbor was the 7th place boat 8 points behind FBYC and had gotten a bullet in the final race. But Rochester finished behind FBYC knocking Rochester out of the top 6 and allowing FBYC and Indian Harbor to claim the final two places in the group to go on to the championship series.
