onThe following week, the team attended the New England Optimist Championships in Newport, hosted by Sail Newport. There were about 330 Optis in the Red, White, and Blue fleets. Alex Hanna got a 4th overall, and Kendall Swenson was the 6th girl and got a 30th overall. Deeper in the finish order were 70 Will Whitmore, 71 Gray Kiger, 100 Erin Jacob, 114 Hannah Steadman, and 161 Jed Londrey. All basically top 1/2 in a huge fleet! Full results are here.
Repeat, that's a 1st followed by a 4th by Alex Hanna at two huge Junior Regattas!
Lasers: The junior laser sailors also had great results up North the past few weeks. They completed in the Canadian Nationals (Laser Radials) where Alex Jacob placed 10th (5th Junior), Austin Powers 11th (6th Junior) and Ben Buhl 17th. The wind blew over 25 knots during a couple of days during the regatta. In the Junior Olympics at Island Heights, FBYC took the 3 of the top 4 Laser Radials with Jeremy Herrin at 2nd, Conrad Roos in 3rd, and Austin Powers in 4th. Madeleine Alderman was the 2nd female in 7th place overall, and the whole team finished in the top half of the results. Alex Jacob and Ben Buhl finished 2nd in the 420 Fleet.
At Hyannis, Jeremy Herrin finished 2nd, Austin Powers 3rd, Madeleine Alderman 9th, and the rest of team in close to the top half of the fleet. Jeremy and Austin actually blew it as Austin was first after Day 2 with an 11 point lead over Jeremy and a 41 point lead over 3rd place; unfortunately, they both received an OCS on the last day with no drops allowed.
Kyle Swenson competed in the Youth Champs as well and got an 11th in the Laser fleet. Kyle has been sailing most of the summer off the bay at national-level events - for instance, in the Laser North Americans in Houston -- sailed the Laser Radial and finished top half in the Gold Fleet District 8 Championships at Sayville YC, NY -- sailed the Laser and won the regatta. US Sailing Youth Champs -- finished 11th in the Laser fleet
420s: While the laser team was at Hyannis, July 28-Aug 1, Alex and Ben went to the Youths at Cabrillo Beach, CA where they placed 11th. When they returned they attended the Buzzards Bay Regatta in New Bedford, Aug 7-8, where they placed 10th, losing a three way tie breaker in the 140 boat fleet.
Prior to that they had placed 2nd of 56 at Island Heights in the Mid Atlantic Junior Olympics and 16th of 109 at the 420 NAs in Brant Beach NJ, July 20-23.( which was one day after the laser Canadian nationals)
Adults: Finally, and these are not really Juniors, Old man James Jacob limped into 13th against 2 former masters world champions ,an Olympic gold medalist, and other foes in the 62 boat full rig lasers. JJ managed 6th at Hyannis
Will and Marie Crump sailed with Thomas Klok in his brand new J-80 at the Buzzards Bay Regatta August 8-9. It was their first race in the boat, named Guldfaxe, and they got a 5th in a 26 boat J-80 fleet who did a total of 9 races. Guldfaxe's program is to participate in the J-80 worlds in Newport this year http://www.j80worlds2010.org/ in October 4-9,2010 and in the J-80 worlds next year in the Klok's home port of Aarhus, Denmark. Buzzards Bay results are here.
