onDeltaville, VA Harry Carpenter, president of Flying Scot, Inc, has registered the first Flying Scot built, Hull number 1, named First One, to compete at the 2007 Flying Scot North Americans scheduled for June 24-27 at Fishing Bay Yacht Club in Deltaville, VA. In another first, First One, at 50 years old, has never competed in a North American event.
The event, held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Flying Scot, has set an unprecedented number of registrants making this one of the largest national regattas in its class. More than 100 boats are expected to vie for over 30 different trophies.
When asked about his decision to sail Flying Scot #1, Carpenter said, My daughter, Carrie, and I talked it over and decided that it was time for FS 1 to sail a North American Championship. What better way to celebrate the boats fiftieth than to finally take her to the big dance.
The Flying Scot, a 19-foot daysailer, was designed by Gordon K. (Sandy) Douglass. Currently, new Scots are identically constructed by Flying Scot, Inc., and strict class rules prevent changes that could make older boats obsolete. With about 6,000 boats built, used boats are available as well. In 1998, the Flying Scot was awarded the high honor of being included in the American Sailing Hall of Fame.
