It's Not Over Yet

onYou name it, it's happened since the first weekend of Opti Kids, already documented on the web for those who can't wait for the next Log. And on the first weekend, our first Team Sailing event with all seven 420's in the water. Another first! A repeat the following weekend, with a second session of Opti Kids and Team Sailing, and a get together for the Junior Week staff--their last night before the most important people arrived, their customers.
Not exactly the best conditions for the first three days, primarily a little too much rain. But this did not faze any of the participants. And unless you have lived through a Junior Week, it will be hard to imagine the variety of activities that are offered morning, noon, and night. Not to mention the planning required to make everything run like clockwork, while rolling with every punch that comes your way. This applied not only to the Junior Division Committee Chairs, but also to the parents and grandparents who deliver their children every day, and those who provide the power and sailboats that are so essential for a successful program.
But it's not over yet...Click Read More... for more on sailing opportunities this summer. But it's not over, even with Junior Week 2003 now history. We still have 8 weeks of summer for Race Team members to hone their sills against Junior from other Yacht Clubs. The schedule for the weekes leading up to the final event, the Junior Regatta on Monday, August 12, is shown elsewhere on this site and in The Log. For those who want to develop their sailing skills further before they start racing, there are ample opportunities for Free Sailing using either your own or club boats. All you have to do is get up to the club on one of the Free Sail days, rig your boat, and you are on your way.
With so many people involved in preparing for Junior Week, starting months before, not to mention all who so willingly gave so freely of their time while the club was awash with youthful exuberance, there is always the danger that in listing all the help by name we will miss some key contributors. But clearly Ruthanna Jenkins, our Junior Division Commander, and her team of Kelly O'Toole, Melanie Crittenden, Jan Monier and Noel Clinard have worked tirelessly for months getting this show on the road. And our two full time coaches, Melanie Clore and Shawn Fisher, ably supported by Dan Herlihy and two volunteers, Chris Jankowski and a drop-in from Ontario, Mackenzie Van Rossem, were key members of the 2003 Junior Week Team. Thank you one and all.
