onThe Junior Division swung into high-octane summertime FUN the first week of June!
Opti Kids: Paul and Julie Ann Wash hosted, and taught along with Coach Austin Powers, 34 sailors aged 5 to 8 for the first week end of Opti Kids. The weather was perfect, and with-in two hours of the start of the first class, the kids were tacking and gybing around whale and sea turtle marks right off our beach! It was impossible to say who had the most fun-the kids, their delighted and astonished parents, Austin or Paul and Julie Ann! They followed sailing with what else-ICE CREAM.
Opti and Laser Race Team: 21 Opti and Laser racers began their summer season with their first practice and met their new coaches, Samuel Herrera and Tomas Dietrich, and welcomed back returning Head Coach Gabriel Moran; all are professional sailors and coaches from South America. The Opti Development Team, for younger racers, will begin practice after Junior Week. When the remaining schools let out for the summer, and all the team members are sailing, FBYC will field a record 39 junior racers on its Race Team! The team is planning on racing at every major junior regatta on the Bay, as well as trips to Newport, RI; Cape May, NJ; and Hyannis, Massachusetts. After practice on Saturday the team members joined the Opti Kids for ice cream and a party at the pool!
Finally, we hosted the University of Virginia Sailing Team for a two day practice AND we taught four sessions of Private Lessons, all in the first week of June!
Next Up: Junior Week, hosted by Doug and Jennifer Bendura; and the Commonwealth of Virginia Junior Championships, hosted by Latane and Patty Montague. Keep them in your thoughts-we are expecting a record number of sailors-at last count 147 for Junior Week alone!
