onNanuq and crew sailed their way to a 2nd place finish in PRHF B and 6th overall in the Ft. Lauderdale to Key West race. Crewmember Stephanie Sweeny also won a handle of rum for the Social Media award for making the most posts about the progress of the racing on the SORC Sailing Facebook page.
The race started Wednesday afternoon with 5' seas in 20knots with a course leading the fleet upwind. By the next morning the wind had disappeared almost entirely and Nanuq found they were able to make better progress under spinnaker with the pole on the deck.
24 hours into the race and still becalmed many of the competitors started worrying the wind wouldn't fill and started their engines to make the party on time. Nanuq stuck with it. It helped that they had some great food and they also had some comfy bunks. They were visited by numerous dolphin and at one point saw a shark. Luckily the only man overboard that they had to retrieve was a sail and that wouldn't have been too enticing to the wildlife.
Nanuq continued to sail along the rumb line close to shore and after 2 beautiful sunrises, two sunsets and 41 hours on the water Nanuq pulled into Key West on Friday morning. The crew was greeted by their family and friends and served a nice big breakfast at their accommodations.
After catching up on some rest during the day, the crew headed over the party headquarters at Kelly's Bar & Grill to celebrate and receive their awards.
While most of the crew have returned home, fresh crew have assembled in Key West and will sail with Glenn in Key West Race Week in the PHRF 2 Class. GOOD LUCK NANUQ!
