onWell, you can do something about it. Get certified in Standard First and CPR (adult/child). It's easy. There are many organizations who provide this training for minimal cost, such as the American Red Cross and American Heart Association. Most courses are open to adults and children. One you should consider is run by Teresa Mason, Director, Pharmacy MCV. Click Read More... for program details.
Teresa runs these four (4) hour courses often. Her up coming schedule is March 29 and April 5 at MCV. The cost is $25.00 and provides the book and the official Red Cross Cards. You can contact Ms. Mason at 804.752.4508, Fax 804.752.4673.
Now you know what to do about caring for your fellow man, Skipper, let's look at what you can do for your boat, you and your crew! Take a good long look at fire sources and potentials on your boat, the kind of protection you have, and its condition. Don't be satisfied by just what is "required" by USCG regulations. What is "required" may not be enough to do the job when you need it most! Look at the distribution of fire extinguishers and make sure there are up to date, of the appropriate type (A,B,C) and carry sufficient capacity to do the job easily. The Docks Committee is having all the fire extinguishers in all locations (building and grounds) at FBYC inspected, replaced and/or recharged. The club has extinguishers near the docks and, due to the number of fire exposures on the grounds, buildings and piers—it's believed that all should be inspected, etc.
Look for news about other safety programs being offered to you by very thoughtful club members. These programs are for your benefit. Make part of your summer preparations the time to take the opportunity to educate yourself for the safety of all concerned.
