A Perfect Day on the Water

onThis past Saturday, August 17th, 18 sailors, members and non-members, gathered for the third FBYC Day Sailing and Training Day of 2024. The day kicked off at the Clubhouse, where sailors introduced themselves, shared their backgrounds, and discussed their goals for the day. It was a diverse group—some were seeking their first sailing experience, others aimed to build on skills learned in previous clinics or crewing opportunities, and several simply wanted to enjoy a day of with other sailing enthusiasts.
Experienced instructors paired up with sailors who requested in-boat coaching, and soon everyone headed to the Fishing Bay Dock, where the Flying Scots were ready and waiting. After a quick orientation and a review of basic sailing skills, the sailors set off, greeted by a truly gorgeous day on Fishing Bay and the Piankatank River. With winds from the south at 8 to 12 knots for most of the day, conditions were perfect for some tremendous sailing. As the day progressed, the winds picked up, adding an extra touch of excitement as the sailors returned to the dock.
Back on shore, the group enjoyed a spread of food and drinks during a lively social hour, filled with conversations about the day’s adventures and plans for future sailing outings. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. The participants enjoyed FBYC, a special place on the Bay, and left excited and eager for more opportunities to get out on the water.
Special thanks go to Tracy Schwarzschild, John Hubbard, Rick Peterson, Mike Karn, Ron Jenkins, Holly Sears, Eleanor Patterson, and Joe Roos for their invaluable support with coaching, on-water assistance, launching, and boat retrieval. Thanks also to Tracy, John, and Rick for lending their boats, and a big shout-out to Robin Rutsky and Rex Booth for organizing a fantastic spread at the social.
It's the dedication of our volunteers that makes events like this possible, helping FBYC bring more people to the joys of sailing. Thank you!
