A happy camper at Opti Kids

The summer edition of the Virginia Sportsman, published this week, features both an article about our junior sailing program and an article about club member Jerry Latell, of Ullman Sails of Virginia. The junior article features a full description of our camps and is illustrated with many recent photos of sailing and camp life-including action shots on Fishing Bay and fun at the pool. Future College Sailors: members of the 2015 Race Team

2015-2016 was a banner year for FBYC junior graduates! FBYC had 4 sailors in major college programs: Alexander Hanna sailed for Texas A&M; Eric Roos for William & Mary; Jeremy Herrin for Old Dominion University; and Austin Powers for Christopher Newport University. We also had a graduate coaching at the college level-Cori Radtke coaches at Bowdoin College in Maine, which has one of the top collegiate sailing programs in the nation.

In the last two years, FBYC junior alums Ellen Hubbard, who sailed for the University of Virginia, and Ben and Mary Catherine Buhl, both of whom sailed for Christopher Newport, completed highly successful collegiate sailing careers.

This fall we …

Maleah Brown enjoying a Private Lesson

It has been a busy summer for the Junior Division, not just during Opti Kids, Junior Week, the Junior Olympics and the Race Teams, but also for our Educational Programs following Opti Kids and Junior Week. Our hope at the beginning of the summer was to keep kids on the water learning and having fun after Opti Kids and Junior Week. Parents and sailors could choose from one or all three non-racing programs, and from beginner to advanced. All were great follow-ups to the larger classes of Opti Kids and Junior Week. The primary goal was the same-to encourage kids to fall in love with sailing by having a great time! The programs were …

I loved OptiKids - age 5

Junior Activities

I just wanted to tell everyone what a great time I had at Opti-Kids at Fishing Bay the past two weekends. We learned a whole lot about sailing and boats and had great fun playing in the water. We learned that it’s not scary when a boat turns over and it’s really fun to sail. I made many great friends. We had lots of help from our mommies and daddies and Paul and Julie and Claire. They really helped us a lot. The snacks and watermelon were great. I also loved swimming in the pool after sailing. I hope that I can go sailing more in the future.

It is perfect for coaching juniors and makes a perfect safety and mark boat for both the Offshore and One-Design Divisions.
