Key West Race Week, hosted by Storm Trysail Club, took place January 17-22, 2016.  It was a wet and wild week of top class boats competing in four Divisions on the Coke bottle green waters of Key West. With weather conditions described by Commander Weather as "juicy and unstable," it was just that.  Predictions of 8-15 knots fell short; in reality 20+ knot breezes with close, steep chop seas were the norm for the week. A feature on FBYC sailor Gannon Troutman and his Pied Piper Crew at Quantum Key West Race week:

Gannon Troutman was one of the biggest stories of Quantum Key West 2015. The 12-year-old skipper of the J/70 Pied Piper captured the imaginations of fellow competitors and spectators alike.  

A feature story about Troutman that appeared on the event website received thousands of views and the youngster became an instant folk hero. Making the story even more remarkable was the fact Troutman and the Pied Piper team finished fifth in a talent-laden 56-boat fleet. The youngest skipper in Key West Race Week history won a race and also had a second and third.

Some of the world's greatest sailors are competing in J/70 class at Quantum Key West 2015. Most of them got beaten by a 12-year-old during Monday's second race of the series.

Gannon Troutman has gone from racing Optimist dinghies to skippering an entry in the largest class at one of the greatest regattas in North America. And the kid is doing pretty well, steering Pied Piper to a third place finish in the talent-laden, 54-boat class.

"I almost fell off the spectator boat!" Robin Troutman said of seeing her son's boat heading to the finish line with the lead pack. "I couldn't believe he was doing that well on the first day."

Southern Bay J70 racers Blake and Lud Kimbrough crack Top 10 at KWRW.   Blake and Lud, sailing their brand new J70, Nostalgia, hull 99, in the 38 boat one-design fleet at Key West Race Week, finished 9^th overall and 2^nd in the sub-fleet re-scored among J70 Corinthian sailors.  As is often the case with new design classes, word is the fleet was loaded with “expert” talent.  KWRW had great wind for all the race days and the J70s got in 12 races over 5 days of racing.  Noel Clinard, also sailing out of FBYC and owner of the first J70 on the southern Bay, Loonatictu, finished 29^th overall and 8^th in the …

It IS [a] MIRAGE!  Christian Schaumloffel and his hearty crew, Tom Dwyer, Kevin McKee, and brothers Steve and Dave Taylor, finished 1st  IN CLASS (PHRF B) and 5th OVERALL in the 2013 Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race.  Quite an accomplishment considering the daunting weather – “rain squalls and swirly winds” followed by a storm …

Heading for Warmer Climes.  Key West Race Week heats up, opening on January 20^th.  To date three (3) southern Bay boats, and one “beyond”, skippers and crew will be there.  Sledd Shelhorse’s Farr 400, Meridian X, will be racing in the High Performance Class.  And, two J70s will race one-design – Noel Clinard’s Loonatictu and Lud and Blake Kimbrough’s Nostalgia are among 39  J70s already signed up.  The Kimbroughs’ J70 will be fresh out of the box; KWRW is hull #99’s first taste of competition.  From “beyond” the southern Bay (Lexington, North Carolina), is well know Teamwork, Robin Team’s J122, sailing in the PHRF 1 class.

I am completely amazed how rich the "Corinthian spirit" has been at our club and how many members are volunteering for our upcoming two day regatta.  After a year of being bound by a computer our kids finally have the opportunity to be on the water again to represent our amazing sailing program and club.  We are hosting the Virginia State Championship which is also the season opener for CBYRA.  With registration open for about a month we have been successfully amassing an army of volunteers to serve over 100 sailors along with their family and friends.  As far as the eye can see will be an armada of kids geared and ready to give it their all June 26-27th …
