The 17th Annual Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta held in Deltaville over the weekend of July 10-12 was another huge success with 61 registered yachts and enthusiastic crowds at the Auction and Gala held for the second consecutive year at the Deltaville Maritime Museum & Holly Point Nature Park.
Typically the Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta is one of the most successful Leukemia Cup Regattas in the country in spite of being one of the smallest of such national venues, and this year should prove to be no exception. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society kicks off its 2014 Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta season in March with a Richmond appearance by world-class sailor and ESPN commentator, Gary Jobson. The program is free and open to the public. It will be held at St. Catherine's School, 6001 Grove Avenue, Richmond, on Sunday afternoon, March 16, 3-5 pm. After four races over two days, 34 boats settled the 2013 Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup competition in the racing fleets. “Mad Dogs and Englishmen [and sailboat racers] go out in the mid day sun”, or words to that effect, and seventy (70), some meeting overlapping criteria, went out on a sizzling race course off Stingray Point both days this past weekend for a very good cause – the 14th Annual Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta. The event was two days of racing and additional days of shore side happenings, including a Friday evening special “Meet and Mingle” with Gary Jobson, National Chair of The Leukemia Cup Regatta. I am completely amazed how rich the "Corinthian spirit" has been at our club and how many members are volunteering for our upcoming two day regatta. After a year of being bound by a computer our kids finally have the opportunity to be on the water again to represent our amazing sailing program and club. We are hosting the Virginia State Championship which is also the season opener for CBYRA. With registration open for about a month we have been successfully amassing an army of volunteers to serve over 100 sailors along with their family and friends.
