Fishing Bay Yacht Club is going to be well represented at the 2016 Southern Bay Race Week at Hampton Yacht Club this Friday-Sunday. Among the 14 FBYC boats for SBRW are a number of boats who sailed the 67th Down the Bay Race over memorial day weekend to get there. Including: Afterthought, Nanuq, Blew By You, Schiehallion, & rhapsody.
It was a winning weekend for the 13 FBYC boats at Southern Bay Race Week in Hampton last weekend. Two boats Afterthought and Mad Hatter won the PHRF-A and PHRF-B divisions while Cheeky Monkey took 3rd in the PHRF-C division. Mad Hatter was also took home the Black Seal Cup (the third time the Fleck's contingent has won the regatta overall on two different boats).
The three days of racing were plagued by light winds in the morning that filled later in the afternoon enabling 6-9 races for the various fleets including a single distance race on Saturday. The last race on Sunday included a phenomial pileup at a leeward mark rounding.
SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK – They came. They raced. They partied. SBRW racers gathered in Hampton for three days of competition that tested the full range of racing skills. On Friday, a lightly rainy, semi-dreary day weather-wise, they raced in Hampton Roads Harbor; on Saturday, a bright sunny, blustery day, featuring NNE breezes in the high teens and low 20s and accompanying seas, they raced one another in a distance race off Bukroe; on Sunday they squared off in multiple windward-leeward races off Ocean View, again under sunny skies with perfect, steady, racing wind. When all was said and done, Neil Ford and Lis Biondi (J24, Rocket J) won their fleet and the coveted BLACK SEAL CUP, thus proving …

SBRW in a nutshell – 89 big boat skippers and crew sailed their brains out for three days in beautiful weather, partied their brains out with rockin’ bands and Gosling’s rum, partook of the downtown pirate festival street skirmishes and swashbucklin’ fun, tried out vendor standup paddle boards, laughed, sang and danced with one another, watched fireworks from the host yacht club lawn and raced, and raced, and raced. The courses were different each day and to take home an award was no easy task. The challenges were in the harbor (triangles – multiple races), off Buckroe in the Bay (a distance race) and off Ocean View in the Bay (windward-leewards – multiple races). The winds were …
VERNAL EQUINOX ON MARCH 2O, 11:02 UTC – SPRING BEGIN-ETH!
Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) was previously, and sometimes still is, referred to as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
Nine days ago, the Columbia 32 Carbon, Uncontrollable Urge, lost its rudder in the vicinity of San Clemente Island while racing in the 4th Annual Islands Race. The crew attempted to set an anchor and attempted to launch a life raft, but ended up abandoning the vessel to swim to shore. One of the crew, Craig Thomas Williams (36) of San Diego, died in the incident. Another of the six-man crew, Ryan Georgianna, has strong southern Bay ties. He hails from Williamsburg and now resides in …
The skipper of THISTLEDOWNE, Bill McClure of Troy, Virginia, and his Charlottesville area team are all signed up for the Hospice Alliance Regatta scheduled in April in St. Petersburg, FL. Bill and his crew earned the right to compete by winning the Turkey Shoot Regatta held last Fall at Yankee Point Marina on Myer Creek, just off the Corrotomon, just off the Rappahannock River. But, for now Bill’s concerns are focused elsewhere. He is in St. Marteen preparing to race in the RORC Caribbean 600, which starts in a week on February 18th. No, Bill will not be sailing Thistledowne, a San Juan 21. Stay tuned – we hope to hear during the coming week …
Southern Bay J70 racers Blake and Lud Kimbrough crack Top 10 at KWRW. Blake and Lud, sailing their brand new J70, Nostalgia, hull 99, in the 38 boat one-design fleet at Key West Race Week, finished 9th overall and 2nd in the sub-fleet re-scored among J70 Corinthian sailors. As is often the case with new design classes, word is the fleet was loaded with “expert” talent. KWRW had great wind for all the race days and the J70s got in 12 races over 5 days of racing. Noel Clinard, also sailing out of FBYC and owner of the first J70 on the southern Bay, Loonatictu, finished 29th overall and 8th in the …

Christian Schaumloffel and his hearty crew, Tom Dwyer, Kevin McKee, and brothers Steve and Dave Taylor, finished 1st IN CLASS (PHRF B) and 5th OVERALL in the 2013 Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race. Quite an accomplishment considering the daunting weather – “rain squalls and swirly winds” followed by a storm …

SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK 2012 - Everything was fine . . . until the tornado hit. SBRW 2012, got off to a great start: Thursday night skippers meeting, Friday a day of perfect racing, awards presentation at the regatta headquarters Hampton Yacht Club and then . . . the tornado cut a swath through adjoining neighborhoods, slammed HYC, and spun along the Hampton waterfront. By early Saturday morning it was crystal clear that there was no way to support further regatta activities. Mercifully, no one was killed or reported seriously injured. Literally seconds before the beast hit, racers, volunteers, the band and friends were evacuated by the alert HYC and security staff from the tent into the interior halls of …
Posted from an iPad aboard Loose Cannon as we head North to Fishing Bay towing Prophet, with Lud Kimbrough and Kenny Cobb aboard. We all raced Friday on the inside course as the wind was predicted to be quite strong. But it ended up at 8-15 knots from the South and Southwest. The John McCarthy race committee started the A fleet on time at 10am and sent us on three races, a W6, then another W6, and finally a W4. Everybody was back at the docks by 3 to 4pm, in plenty of time to enjoy the beers at the event tent in the HYC parking area.
Rain began to fall about 5pm, and by 6-7 it was getting squally …
