You will notice a new look on the Club wide news and announcement emails. We have redesigned the template and added a link to “View email in browser” at the top of each email. The link will be helpful to those of you whose email client “Blocks Images”. In the browser view, the images should be visible. Secondly if you visit https://www.fbyc.net/Club/EmailNews you can see an archive of the last 10 “Membership” and “In Memoriam” emails.
We continue with rapid migration to our new website. We now have copied all 2003-2017 event sailing instructions, Notices, links to pictures, and results onto https://new.fbyc.net/events/. As a result, I shortly will remove navigation links …
Our website migration to a new modern system continues at a faster than expected pace.Today we continued our conversion. Most of you are familiar with our event pages. This week we launch new event pages. As of this morning all links to event pages on our Home page - www.fbyc.net will now take you to the new event pages on new.fbyc.net.The pages will look similar on a computer - with a left side bar showing links to register, who is coming, list of the chairs, and links to show event notices and results. The large right hand side has the sailing instructions as found in the Yearbook. We hope …
I discovered Monday that most members have been unable to make new news postings for sometime. The permissions procedures have changed and it is now set up again as intended. Any member can now post news articles and in fact we encourage it. Tell us about your sailing adventures or give everybody a report of a FBYC sailing event. If you make a mistake in the posting, ask Brian or Strother to edit it for you.
NOTE: You must be logged in to https://new.fbyc.net to access the Post News page. We have attempted to redirect you to a LogIn page if you ask to visit Post News Page. If not entitled to Post News, like if not …
We continue to make gradual changes to the website navigation and behavior. This notice is simply to advise you that as you visit our website, you may begin to see unfamiliar looking pages as I have begun movement of pages from the old site https://www.fbyc.net/ to the new one https://new.fbyc.net/.
In the last couple weeks, most links under Club on the blue navigation bar were moved to the new site. For example https://new.fbyc.net/pages/club/ now shows what formerly was seen at https://www.fbyc.net/Club/A/ This week I have copied the content on many other pages linked on the blue nav bar and created pages on the new …
At long last, we have a new header on the top of https://new.fbyc.net that is colorful and responds to mobile devices. Both of our websites https://www.fbyc.net and https://new.fbyc.net will continue to look the same on a computer, but when you visit the new site on a mobile device, you will see a different look.
The top of the page will have a blue bar, with a burgee on the left, and a “hamburger” icon on the right. Click on the icon and it opens the navigation menu - seen in second image.
You will likely see the header when you register for an event on your phone or tablet. I want …
Oh no! We had a glitch! Registration for OptiKids, Junior Week, Race teams and August OptiWeek will be available again February 2. If you already registered, we have your registration!
I could not be more pleased with the launch of our new registration system. Over the last 25 days it has been offered as the preferred option and it has processed 60 successful registrations. Those registrations have included 35 credit card charges. We have not received a single inbound call or email about any substantial issue and 100% of actual payments made were processed without any error. As a result, the Board has approved removal of optional links to the legacy system on the Home page.
As a reminder any Sign Up! link will direct you to https://new.fbyc.net/ where you will be required to log in. The necessary credentials are the same as the Zope …
We are now live with our new Event Registration System. We have been testing it for 3 weeks with both paying and non-paying events and with members and non-members. Most feedback is that it is very easy to use, and not prone to errors and breakages. It also works fine on both computers and mobile devices. Most Red links to Sign Up! will now direct you to the new system which occurs on https://new.fbyc.net/. You will be required to log in using the same credentials that you use on the traditional - Legacy web site. I encourage everybody to register with the new system using the Red Sign Up! links. But if …
In anticipation of moving our event registration system to our Django web site, please be aware that it is set up with a compact navigation menu designed to work well with mobile devices. To see that, please visit https://new.fbyc.net/. If you are on a computer, the website will look about the same as our traditional site https://www.fbyc.net. But if you are on a mobile platform (iPhone, iPad or Android phone) the site will look entirely different at the top.
The difference is the "Compact Navigation" menu. If you see the "Hamburger" icon on the top right corner, touch it to expand the real menu. And use the displayed links to …
I am very excited to announce that within the next few weeks we will switch from our 15 year old Zope Registration System to a new system. The change means many of the technical issues we see should go away, plus the new system is designed to work well on both computers and mobile.
One major and unfamiliar change is that the registration will be done on our Django web site https://new.fbyc.net which means you will be required to log into a different web site than www.fbyc.net in order to register. Most of you have never done that, even though we have used that site for several years for our news postings and our online …
Our 2016 Year Book received final pre-press approval today. Thank you to our editors: Meg Rock, Tracy Schwarzschild, Bob Fleck, Jon Deutsch, Doug Bendura, A.L. Braun, and Doug Selden, and to our recruiters for Race and Social Chairs: Jim Raper, Becca Wash, Joe Nelson, Borna Kazerooni, and John Galloway and finally Nica Waters, final review editor, for lots of volunteer work. Pictured holding the proof is Sara Joyner, a graphic designer at Uptown Color in the Fan. Sara does all production for our Log and also for the Yearbook. The book is going to press tomorrow and will then be mailed to each member. Expect to see the book in you mailbox in early April …
We have finished our winter long website upgrade project. We continue to transition our website https://www.fbyc.net/ where we continue to have our Home Page, all event listing pages, event pages, and most webpages, to our new more modern Django website https://new.fbyc.net/ where we post news, edit web pages, keep our member database, and, new in 2016 keep all account creation and editing pages and the resetting of password pages. About a month ago we finished the project and have had a soft opening all January.
Users may notice some differences.
The New Website probably works better on mobiles devices - at least the navigation links appear differently on a small device.
Last Thursday I presented the FBYC board with a plan to make some behind-the-scenes changes to the FBYC website in late November and December. Now that the sailing season is over, we have the opportunity to cure a simple database design issue.
Everybody who uses the website has a user account, which knows your contact information. The member database also keeps your contact information, in a separate table. Our goal is to "normalize" the database, meaning both sets of data will be kept in one place. A small web site committee approved the plan last night. In preparing for the change, we have found and adjusted about 200 user records where there was an inconsistency with the user and member …
On Saturday we moved our web site to a new hosting provider https://www.digitalocean.com/. Because of a quirk in our technology, our old provider shut the site down for 5-10 minutes from time to time. Digital Ocean offers a more flexible service that should allow our site to operate flawlessly. Let's hope so!
Paul Wash made the needed changes to the IOS App, so it is up and running on the relocated database.
Please let me know if you run across any issues. Strother Scott.
When you look at the https://new.fbyc.net/news/ News page, you will see a long list of "Tags" on the left sidebar. New Posts can be tagged so that old posts can be found more easily. We have recently fixed an issue with Tags - now all Tags are converted to "lower case" and they all work again. Generally if you make a new post, try to use an existing tag that makes sense, but it is OK to create new tags as needed. Any multiple word tag should be either typed as one word or connected by a "-" or a "_" to make it work as a single tag. Enjoy. Strother.
FBYC now has a brand new app for the iPhone and iPad. Now you can get quick access to club information such as:
Upcoming Events & Information
General Sailing Instructions & Appendix
Current local weather conditions
Member Directory [members only]
The FBYC mobile application helps connect sailors by providing useful information about club events, weather, and sailing programs on your iPhone and iPad. If you are a member of the club, use your existing FBYC user name and password to login and access the member directory from your device.
It is available for Apple devices with ios7 or later.
Big thanks to Paul Wash, the web team and all of the folks who helped test this out over the …
We have modified the entry form to require a first step to select the Registration type. So when you register, you will see a choice per the image below.
Social Registration only, or
Have boat participating.
Once you select your type, the usual input forms for name contact info, and boat if applicable, instantly appear further down the same entry form.
We found that people who were registering for Social only were running into issues with our online entry form. We hope this small change will make it easier for all. If you select Social Registration only, you will not be presented with a requirements to enter boat information.
Every year in early March we produce a Yearbook and a Sailing Events Book. This year, based on the thought that many people refer to the online event pages when they come to events, the information in the two has been combined into a 2015 Yearbook. It contains the Yacht Register, the Membership Roster and all the information needed about our sailing events. The combined book features a new cover design, with drone photos of the main clubhouse during a Laser Regatta and a nice overhead shot of the Jackson Creek docks.
The hard work to produce the book requires the sailing division commanders to drafting of the event notices, which has now been done, and that information is already …
Last week after the upgrade, we identified and fixed a few issues. Yesterday we noticed a new Date issue. The Fall Project Day is on Saturday Dec 6, and it was showing up as Dec 5 in some cases. The issue is now fixed.
