#136 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE

Key West Race Week Wrap Up:  It seemed fewer than usual southern Bay racers (boats and crew) headed to Key West this year, but those who did had the expected super good time!  In the J/29 one design fleet of 10 boats, Case Whittemore and the Patriot gang finished 4th overall scoring 27 points in their best 7 races (the worst of 8 races being tossed under the throw out provision).  Right behind Case was Paul Andersen and the Titillation bunch, having made a comeback after a day 1 collision with old [now friendly] rival HustlerHustler finished second overall with 14.1 points behind overall winner Rhumb Punch (John Edwards), Bay brethren from Solomon, Maryland, with 14 points.  Also, racing in the J/29 fleet were Peter Davidson with Fast Lane (7th overall) and Sam Marshall, Night Music (10th overall). Mike Karn brought Insatiable (Mariah 27) in 5th overall in the 10 boat PHRF 7 fleet, one point out of a tie for 4th overall.  Meanwhile in the really big boat fleets, Javelin scored 2nd overall in the IMS fleet (5 boats) and 5th overall among 10 boats in the PHRF 2 fleet. Ken Saylor and Fred Sage were on board Javelin. For complete and detailed KWRW scoring in all fleets, check out the web site at www.premiere-racing.com   Boat of the Week honors went to a J/105, Zuni Bear from San Francisco.

The name Voodoo Chile, Leroi Lissenden's Tripp 33, comes from a piece done by rock guitar great Jimi Hendrix.  That's Chile, pronounced Chile (rhymes with smile), as in "Git yourself in heah for dinnah, Chile!"

Racers Who Take Roller Furling Credits:  If you are planning on buying a new headsail consider this:  PHRF has clarified their RF sail rules.  Here's what they now say.  Section 17B: RF headsails built before 31 December 2000, may be constructed of any material except aramid or carbon material, and must have Ultraviolet protection on the leech and foot.  Section 17B will be removed 31 December 2003.
Section 17C: RF headsails built after 31 December 2000.  Sails may be constructed of any material, but laminated sails must be protected by continuous woven taffeta on both sides and all RF sails must have 4.0 ounce minimum woven UV cover present on both the leech and foot.  IF YOU TAKE AN RF CREDIT, THIS IS STUFF YOU AND YOUR SAILMAKER NEED TO KNOW.  (Note that 17B will go away after this season.  Plan accordingly.)

Key West Bumper Boats:  Among others, a couple of Chesapeake Bay boats had encounters of the too close kind the very first day at Key West Race Week.  Javelin (Farr 49, Annapolis) put the bonk on Idler's starboard stern quarter before the start and Titillation (J/29, Fishing Bay) put the hit on Hustler.  Both hitters were DSQ'd.

Sailing School on the "Rivah" - It's official, Premier Sailing School, owned and operated by Phil and Arabella Denvir, has an additional base of operations at Porpoise Cove Marina in Deltaville.  This is in addition to their Tides location in Irvington.  Contact:  Premier Sailing School at (804) 438-9300.

Dave Alexander has discovered a KWRW spin-off - The Schooner Wharf Bar Wreckers Race Cup Series.  Dave's name was listed among the participants as was Mike Alexander's and Lane Briggs'.  Since, as with all such information from afar, the names may "...have been changed to protect the innocent [??!!],"  readers should verify results with the subjects.

The Daytona 500, another "racer thing", runs February 16th.  Southern Bay legend has it that at least two of our sailboat racers have stock car racing in their blood - at a minimum in their DNA residue - Dan Smoker of Seaford, and Martin Holland of Hampton.

MURPHY'S LAW:   Key West Race Week is always good.  But, until this year I did not see it as a mid-winter cookout - plenty of [almost] T-bones! Living to race, racing to live. /s/ Murphy the Racing Beagle
