#230 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE

Lin Mccarthy on Monday January 3, 2005 11:50AM

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  Race full on into 2005!
Kudos to Southern Bay Junior Programs:  Just nice to note that the southern Bay is hosting significant USODA (Opti) events.  How about this:  The second USODA National Championship in the southern Chesapeake will be hosted this coming July at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.  The first was hosted by Hampton Yacht Club when the 1999 Opti Nationals were sailed right off Strawberry Banks.  And, Fishing Bay Yacht Club, just this past October, hosted the Atlantic Coast Championships for the Optis.  Three major events in 6 years - not bad!  Kudos to all those parents, friends and hard working volunteers who are steering our southern Bay junior programs and to the kids that are learning to sail and doing it right!
The Key West Race people may call A Lil' Tipsy's appearance there a debut, but the actual debut for the JS 9000 happened Saturday in the OPCYC-HYC New Years Madness Race.  A Lil'Tipsy, owned by Frank Silver and Melissa McAllister and sailing out of Colington Harbor YC (North Carolina), was first overall in the 2005 annual January 1st event.  Tipsy beat the 28 other participants, overtaking everyone in the pursuit race and capturing 2nd place overall finisher Namesake, Craig Olsen's Olson 30, with time to spare.  RESULTS:  Spinnaker 1:  1. A Lil'Tipsy, Melissa McAllister; 2.Namesake, Craig Olsen;  Spinnaker 2: 1.Callinectes, Ben Cuker (3rd overall); 2.Amarylyn, Dana Dillon (8th overall); 3.Miss Anne Thrope, Richard Payne (12th overall);  Non-Spin 1: 1.Faith, Jerry Lotz (5th overall); 2.Excelsior, Steve Ritz (9th overall); 3.Destiny, Barry Wise (10th overall).  Non-Spin 2: 1.Sea Slipper, Bob Wagner (4th overall); 2.Braker, Rick Griffin (6th overall); 3.Egia, Jack Clayton (7th overall).  First in the Cruising 1 class,  Ali-Ru, John Jones (14th overall) and in the Cruising 2 class, Playtime, James Van Dyke (19th overall).  Event Chairman: Jeff Rogers.

Last Frost Bites on the southern Bay.  Four SeaSons captures first place!  The last big boats frost biting in the southern Bay were the York River Yacht Club racers. The YRYC fleet started their series on October 3rd  and finished on December 19, one race per Sunday, windward/leewards in the York just east of the Coleman Bridge.  There were 12 races and 15 boats entered in the series.  RESULTS:  1. Mike Mastracci, Four Seasons; 2.Steve Bowen, Dream On; 3.Bill Strauss; Excalibur.  Special kudos to Bill Strauss, who did every single race!  We are talkin' serious frost biter here!

COCK ISLAND RACE alive and kickin'.  Portsmouth Boat Club has stepped up and teamed up with the City of Portsmouth to keep this annual  sailing brouhaha alive.  The regatta's regular weekend of June 24-25 is on the "near final" draft of the 2005 CBYRA Region 4 calendar.

Plans are for Kahuna crew, Chris Connors and Bryce Barritt, to leave Charleston today  taking Sanford Richardson's Big Red Boat to Ft Lauderdale for the race to Key West which begins January 12 and gets the boats to southern Florida for Key West Race Week (Jan 17-21). Buddy DeRyder will be crewing on Kahuna for the Lauderdale-Key West Race too and says offshore weather "looks good" now.  He is hopeful of one more week of good attitude from Momma Nature.  Also, among boats in the near 300 boat fleet at KWRW will be the McAllister/Silver Js 9000, A Lil'Tipsy.  Tipsy will make the trip from Hampton by land!

Word from US SAILING TEAM homie STEVE HUNT:  Steve is settled into a "regular" life that includes a home in one place (San Diego) and a j-o-b that pays the bills of life.  He is still doing a lot of sailing and is very successful in major events around the country.  In Vanguard 15s Steve captured first in the Southern California Midwinter Championship, first in the Spring Gold Cup, and second in the Vanguard 15 Nationals in New Orleans,  sailing all three with Tracey Treaccar.   And,  Steve was on the winning match racing team in San Francisco Challenge Regatta, where Steve, sailing with Bill Hardesty, beat (3-1) Paul Cayard in J/105s.  As for Steve in future Olympic competitions, he says maybe.  If he does, he'll more likely go for the Laser or 49 class - says he has gained 20 pounds!

New players for 2005 - Another Pearson Flyer expected in PHRF B:  Bob Archer and Chris Beahr have bought BAD HABIT (previously owned, but not raced in 2004, by Martin Holland) and intend to race her in PHRF B in 2005.  Archer and Beahr have raced together on Archer's Capri 25 About Time in PHRF C for a number of years.  Another Flyer, Larry Preddy's PF Flyer, is a very familiar presence on the southern Bay race circuit.

KWRW - Southern Bay Connections in the fleet - As of New Year's Eve, there were 296 boats entered in Key West Race Week.  Here are 11 that most southern Bay racers know.  Five of the 13 J/29s that came to Hampton for the class' North American Championships this past October will be at KWRW: Rhumb Punch (John and Linda Edwards), Phone (Jay Weaver), Hustler (John and Tony Esposito), Wallbanger (Brian and Kristen Robinson), and Killshot (Bob Wardwell).  Then there is Lloyd Griffin's (Elizabeth City, NC) Hadley 40, Cash Flow,  with some of the crew from Mike Austin's Movin' On expected on board.  Peter Hunter's Thompson 30, Wairere, from Kill Devil Hills, NC, has raced in several Bay events and Mike Karn's G&S 27, Insatiable, from Richmond/Deltaville, is a familiar homie.  Dame Blanche, Othmar von Blumencron's Beneteau 40.7, sails out of Annapolis, but claims Great Falls, Virginia, as hometown.  And, as mentioned in other notes in this SBRNYCU, Sanford Richardson's Kahuna and the McAllister/Silver JS 9000 will be there.

The College of William and Mary  sailing team is sponsoring "An Evening with US Olympic Head Sailing Coach Gary Bodie" February 5, 7:00 pm, at The Mariners' Museum (Newport News).  It's going to be a gala, i.e. silent auction, etc.  For info email  sailin@wm.edu.  W&M was chartered in 1693 (that's not a typo) - 'bout time they got that sailing team thing going!

Bill Dougherty Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 15, at St John's Church in Hampton, Virginia.  The service will begin at 11:00 am and will be followed by a reception at Hampton Yacht Club.
