# 317 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE

Lin Mccarthy on Monday October 16, 2006 09:39AM

GCBSR pulls into Portsmouth:  Somewhat to most southern Bay racers' chagrin, the Pride of Baltimore, hit the finish line of the 2006 Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race first and won her fleet even after the handicap corrections were made.  Our beautiful Virginia finished 17 minutes and 3 seconds (corrected) behind Pride, for 2nd place in the Class AA.   A number of the 34 race participants are docked along the downtown Portsmouth waterfront and are well worth a look-see.  Class Winners:  Class AA (6 entries) - Pride of Baltimore, Jan Miles; Class A (5 entries) - Adventurer, Art Birney;  Class B (12 entries)- Prom Queen, Roger Worthington; Class C (10 entries) - Adventure, David Holmes;  Class Catamaran (1 entry) - Peace, Ann & Nelville Clement.  Larry Bryant, who races Whisper, in the PHRF fleet on the southern Bay, was honcho (co-chairman) from the southern Bay for the 2006 event.

IMPORTANT INFO FOR SOUTHERN BAY CLUBS' BIG BOAT SCHEDULERS:  Look for the first draft (tentative schedule)  information for 2007 by the end of the week.   Start now to talk up plans for your club's coming  season of racing.  For additional info call Lin McCarthy (757) 850-4225 (Region 4, South),  or Tom Roberts (804) 843-2682 (Region 4 North).

'ROUND THE LIGHTS RACE - This coming Saturday, October 21.  This is an annual event sponsored by Old Point Comfort Yacht Club.  The race is unique in the southern Bay racing area, in that racers are allowed to choose the order of roundings.  A boat may round either lighthouse, Middle Ground or Thimble Shoal, first.  This makes  PRE-race planning especially important since key strategies must be decided with regards to currents, winds, psychological impact of meeting big ships near small channels  and having to wear warm undies for the first time this fall.  Tuning up for the special post-race party is critical too.  This is a CBYRA sanctioned event and counts in the Chesapeake Bay Distance Racing Series standings. This is a staggered start "chase race". Entry fee is $25.  For information contact Dennis Miner at  867-1028  or Steve Lunsford at 875-0907.  Don't miss this one - it's a goodie.

Good Golly, Miss Molly!  It is getting to be time for the CCV Awards Party and Annual Bash.  November 10th, Friday, at the Radisson Ball Room in downtown Hampton.  Live band, good eats and drinks, and all your racing friends, as we say, with REAL clothes on!  Early Bird registration ($30@)) saves you $5 per person, if you make your ressies before October 20.  For info contact Karl Petersen at (757) 440-8772.

SEA YA Wins 2006 Albemarle 100:  Jim Elliott's Bavaria 44, Sea Ya, won the Albemarle 100 which runs from Collington to Edenton and back.  Second place in the annual event sponsored by Collington Yacht Club was taken by Frank Silver in his B-25, Phantom, and third by Brian Orson in Big Juan, San Juan 34.

Heads Up!  2006 FROSTBITE SERIES starts in two weeks - Sunday, October 29.  Five consecutive Sundays of racing in Hampton Roads harbor around fixed marks.  Line up boat, skipper, and crew now.  For info contact Dick Boykin at (757) 890-0093.

MURPHY'S LAW:   Cooler weather has put in a warning appearance.  Doesn't mean we racers will stop racing.  May have to stop by the store for a keg of mildew killer and fabric freshener for those foul (really foul) foulies that you stuffed in the back of the car trunk last spring!    /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.

VOODOO CHILE - well maintained and optimized Tripp 33.  Sails easily to PHRF 81  at 13+kts downwind and 6.4 up.  Lifting keel (4-8 up / 7-4 down) and standing headroom.  Drysailed w/gelcoat bottom.  Too much stuff to list.  Call or email for info.  Closest offer to $40K gets you into a good  A  Fleet boat.  Leroi at  llissenden@hotmail.com  or (804) 874-1146.
