# 390 SOUTHERN BAY RACING NEWS YOU CAN USE

Lin Mccarthy on Monday April 21, 2008 06:51PM

Meanwhile, up on the Rappahannock River, the FBYC SPRING SERIES got underway.  Twenty-six (26) boats started on Saturday with a weather related reduction of numbers returning on Sunday.  When all was said and done, for the weekend, the standings in the fleets were:  PHRF A:  1.Brad Davis, Blade Runner; 2.David Clark, Corryvreckan; 3.Sam Mitchener, Double Eagle.  PHRF BC: 1.Jerry Latell, Boomerang; 2.Drake Johnstone, Cat's Pajamas; 3.Allan Heyward, La Maga.  PHRF Non-Spin: 1.Dick Cole, Nutcracker; 2.Robert DeJong, Temptress.  PRO: Brooks Zerkel.

CCV SPRING SERIES, Race #3 - April 27, Hampton Roads Harbor.  CCV will run a middle distance race in the Harbor using government marks.   This race will also be scored as part of  the 2008 Chesapeake Bay Distance Racing Series. The first warning scheduled for 1030.   There will be starts for each PHRF Spinnaker Fleet, PHRF Non-Spin, and a Cruising Fleet.  Valid 2008 PHRF ratings are required for all PHRF racers.  OPEN TO ALL.   Boats with CCV Racing Memberships are automatically entered; all other racers must submit an entry form and fees no later than the day before race day.  For information, contact John or Lin McCarthy at (757) 850-4225.

Mother's Moods Frustrate Weekend Racers:    Mother Nature messed with southern Bay racers as she ran her magic from one end of the spectrum to the other.  On Saturday, she toyed with the AZALEA FESTIVAL RACE by taking away the wind and adding a good dose of current.  That made for interesting starting line situations.  A total of 22 big boats came out, 12 in the PHRF Non-Spin Fleet and 10 in the Cruising Fleet.  Top finishers in PHRF Non-Spin:  1. Black Widow (Irwin 38), Leo Wardrup;  2. Ali-Ru (Morgan 36), John Lones;  3. 5-Speed (Lindenburg 28), Eric Schwab.   In Cruising:  1. Cat's Paws (Island Packet 44), Mike Turner;  2. Levante (Catalina 400), Juan Diaz.  Race Chairman: Chess Harris.

On Sunday, for the opening of the CCV SPRING SERIES, Mother Nature seemed to have forgotten to take her calming "purple pills"; she threw a hissy fit part way through the first race of the day.   Kudos  to the 26 PHRF boats who sailed undaunted into the teeth of  "iffy"  weather forecasts and gray-black skies.  Things went along fine until Mother decided to toss a mini-blow (33 knots and buckets of rain) into the mix.  Racing was abandoned because of visibility, or lack thereof, and the fleet headed in to a post-race party of free hotdogs, beer, and soft drinks.   PRO: John McCarthy;  Mark Boats: David Gibbings and Tom and Jane Fowler.

Rumor has it that  Mitch Doughtie has acquired Jerry Latell's Old School, a fine S2 7.9  that hopefully will see action soon on the southern Bay.  Mitch sails out of Portsmouth Boat Club.

IMPORTANT CHANGE TO YORK RIVER CUP PLANS:   Re-location and re-organization have caused re-adjustment of York River Cup (June 7, 2008) plans.  York River Yacht Club's recent move to their new location at Crown Pointe Marina in Perrin Creek off the York River have caused YRYC to have to withdraw from  their previous fund-raising effort for the Waterman's Museum in Yorktown.  For this year, the York River Cup will be centered further down the river, at Crown Pointe Marina (skippers' meeting and post-race pool-side cookout) and entry fee will be cut in half  (dropped from $50 to $25).  The race rendezvous will move from York River R24 to R22.  All other information will remain essentially the same.  For info contact Brian Gregory  at (804) 642-9157.  Make a note on your copy of the NOR and plan to check out YRYC's new digs!

When races are abandoned, there are unintended consequences that require event organizers and support staff to make snap decisions regarding post-race activities.  CCV Spring Series racers found a great hotdog and snacks table laid out  in the HYC Lounge and a tapped keg waiting for them out of the weather, on the back porch yesterday.  Kudos to Richard Ashe, HYC manager, and to the wonderful staff for meeting the needs of 26 big boats worth of racers on very short notice.

In yesterday's mini-blow the folks on Greg Cutter's Elliott 770, Gremlyn, did 12 knots.... and, who knows how fast they went  once they "closed their eyes and just hung on!"

Two USNA Navy 44s, Renaissance and Integrity, are among more than 50 boats already entered in 2008 Southern Bay Race Week (May 30-June 1).

MURPHY'S LAW:  PHRF now requires that the boat's name must be on PFDs and "other buoyant equipment".  So, since Yrs Truly , the Racing Beagle , is designed to float extremely well, I'll have an appropriate message tattooed on to my belly -  perhaps, something like "This Side Up"  and  maybe  "Stand Back" printed on my tail!    /S/  Murphy the Racing Beagle, the sailing spirit in us all.
