onThe 2013 Down The Bay Race was one for the record books. It was an epic downwind race that smashed the 30-year old record. FBYC boats taking part included Excitation, Nanuq, Mad Hatter, Wind Dancer & Schiehallion.
Bob Fleck's Mad Hatter won the PHRF-B division and finished 8th overall. Brad Miller's Schiehallion finished 2nd in PHRF-C and was 12th overall. Glen Doncaster's Nanuq was 3rd in A2 and 13th overall. Complete Results.
Here's a writeup that sums it up pretty well from Jon Deutsch who sailed aboard Excitation:
Friday morning we set out on Excitation – a Farr-Dickinson 37 for the Down The Bay Race from Annapolis to Hampton in what would be an epic race. The forecast was for north west wind moving north and bringing the wind right down the bay making for a very fast trip south. Sailing the race were 30 boats ranging in size from a 24-foot J-24 to a 52′ TP52......
Jon also posted some video from aboard Excitation.
And for comparision, here's some video from the TP52 Irie sailing nearly twice as fast as Excitation.
One of the competitor's made an unscheduled stop during the race at FBYC. The J/105 Special K lost their mast just north of the Rapahhanock River and docked at FBYC. (picture)
