NOAA has a number of weather buoys off the east coast. You can check out your choice at http://seaboard.ndbc.noaa.gov/Maps/Southeast.shtml . The pages are very slow to load in your browser.

One of the buoys is #41002 - a bouy anchored about 200 miles SE of Cape Hatteras at 32.27 N 75.42 W (32°16'19"N 75°25'02"W) in a Water depth: 3,785.6 m with a Watch circle radius: 3,100 yards. You can visit the web page for the Buoy at http://seaboard.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.phtml?$station=41002 Once that page loads, you can see the wind speed - wave height at that location - which is still well in front of Isabel. At 8am today, the readings were:

Wind Direction (WDIR): NE ( 40 deg true )
Wind Speed (WSPD): 27.2 kts
Wind Gust (GST): 35.0 kts
Wave Height (WVHT): 23.6 ft
Dominant Wave Period (DPD): 17 sec

Read more shows the increasing wave height in the last 5 days.plotwave
