The summer edition of the Virginia Sportsman, published this week, features both an article about our junior sailing program and an article about club member Jerry Latell, of Ullman Sails of Virginia. The junior article features a full description of our camps and is illustrated with many recent photos of sailing and camp life-including action shots on Fishing Bay and fun at the pool. The article about Jerry highlights his sail loft in Deltaville, and the fact that he is currently making sails for the USCGC Eagle, the Coast Guard sail training barque.
The magazine also has plans for a feature length article about our junior racing program in an upcoming edition. You can …

OPTI KIDS AND JUNIOR WEEK This year’s Opti Kids and Junior Week smashed all records for numbers and fun! A total of 44 sailors attended Opti Kids and 143 sailors and over 40 full time volunteers and 6 pro coaches attended Junior Week! The weather was perfect. Paul and Julie Ann Wash taught Opti Kids, and every sailor left loving sailing. Doug and Jennifer Bendura then did an amazing job of organizing everything from the class assignments to the tee shirts for Junior Week. There were 13 separate classes this year; 200 kids and their families attended the pool party with the teen band ZigZag, and on Thursday night we hosted 340 at the traditional catered cook …
I just wanted to tell everyone what a great time I had at Opti-Kids at Fishing Bay the past two weekends. We learned a whole lot about sailing and boats and had great fun playing in the water. We learned that it’s not scary when a boat turns over and it’s really fun to sail. I made many great friends. We had lots of help from our mommies and daddies and Paul and Julie and Claire. They really helped us a lot. The snacks and watermelon were great. I also loved swimming in the pool after sailing. I hope that I can go sailing more in the future.
Summer is here! This past weekend the FBYC Juniors kicked off their summer with the start of Opti Kids and RaceTeams.
On Saturday and Sunday, Julie Ann and Paul Wash, along with coaches Claire Lennarz and Austin Powers, welcomed 44 juniors and their parents to Opti Kids and their first FBYC junior sailing experience! Opti Kids is for our youngest sailors, aged 5 to 8, and is one of our most important programs. By the end of the first day the new sailors were steering the Club’s Optis around marks under sail and learning “tiller-towards-trouble”. It was hot, so it was a perfect weekend to practice capsize drills. Everyone-but …

Exciting news: 60 juniors joined FBYC with their families in 2014! Most of these juniors have never attended any of our camps or learn to sail programs, and many of their parents have questions about our various programs, race teams, classes and organization; and most important, how to choose the most appropriate events for their sailor.
We very loosely divide the programs into two overlapping sections: educational and racing. We are especially proud of our educational programs, which will be covered in this newsletter. Opti Kids and Junior Week form the foundation of the Junior Division. All but 7 of the 46 racers on the 2014 Race Teams started sailing as campers during either Opti Kids or Junior Week. Both programs …

Opti Kids
Paul and Julie Ann Wash, assisted by ODT Coach Austin Powers and 40 parents and grandparents, finished the second week end of Opti Kids on June 14 & 15 with a cook out for 100 and an exciting sail to the far beach in Fishing Bay. All 34 kids looked like old pros by the end of the class, thanks to the calm and patient teaching of Paul, Julie Ann and Austin. Not a tear was shed, and all are promising to come back for more sailing at FBYC! Perhaps just as importantly, the parents and grandparents …
