Gunkholer's Cruise a success!

Nica Waters on

Cruising News
The Gunkholer’s Cruise promised destinations dependent on “weather and whim” – and the weather was definitely a factor as we set off into the hottest week of the year yet. The week was a microcosm of the larger cruising “scene” as boats and people came and went. Although all would have very happily dialed down the thermometer and upped the wind factor, fun and new experiences were had by everyone there.

Calypso (Nica, Julian, and Madeleine Waters, with Jeremy along for the first day), Sophie (Bob, Alicia, and Melissa Mac Wright, with 3 guests) , and Infusion (Charlie, Stephie, Brie, Chip, and Ned Maurer) set off from FBYC on Sunday morning for Pirate’s Island (aka Little Bay at Dymer Creek …

Junior Activities
The FBYC Junior race team tacked through two days of back to back regattas at Miles River and Tred Avon Yacht Club's Junior regattas earlier this week. Both regattas were blessed with moderate winds and reasonbly confortable temperatures Monday and Tuesday. A total of ten FBYC Juniors made the trip to participate in the regattas and enjoy the surroundings in Saint Michaels and Oxford, Maryland. Parents made a trip of it with some fine dining, shopping and lounging at these fine clubs.

FBYC's Alex Jacob took 1st Place Overall and in Blue Fleet in the 50+ boat Optimist class in both regattas. His colleague Austin Powers followed up with 8th overall at Miles River and 4th overall at …

FBYC Junior Sailor Crosses Atlantic Ocean

Eric Powers on

Junior Activities
Okay so she flew across in a 747 but Madeleine Alderman still deserves loads of credit for making the trek across the big pond to participate in the British Optimist Open National Championship hosted by the Pwllheli Sailing Club in Wales.

Madeleine traveled back to the UK with her fellow Optimist sailor Jane Sceales following last week's Optimist National Championship Regatta held in Sarasota, Florida. Madeleine reports winds in excess of 25 knots every day this week with large seas and chilly temperatures. After eight races, Madeleine stands at 40th and Jane at 22nd in the 117 boat senior fleet. We'll have to wait till Friday's results to see where they come out in the wash after …

On September 9-10 Fishing Bay YC would like to invite you to attend the 25th Annual Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Championship. If you've never attended in the past, this event has become a must on many Laser Masters calendars. The event has had two three time winners, Rob Overton of Hampton YC and James Jacob of SSA and more recently FBYC. Invitations are being extended to all former champions. The 1989 winner, the doyen of Masters racing, Bob Saltmarsh, was the first to commit. Our 1998 Champion, Mike Waters, has been a regular in the club's Spring Series races, perhaps in an attempt to gain some local knowledge. Aside from the racing there will be a great dinner …

33 Sailors Brave the Heat at the FBYC August Jr. Regatta

catesby jones on

Junior Activities
Thirty-three sailors from 3 lower Chesapeake Bay Sailing Clubs braved the 100-plus heat index at the Fishing Bay August Junior Regatta on Thursday August 3, 2006.

Thanks to an able crew of volunteers, Fishing Bay was able to host a very successful regatta, despite the heat and fickle breeze. Winds ranged from 0-5 knots and came from most every point on the compass during some part of the race day, putting a premium on solid race committee and mark boat work. Brooks Zerkel and his crew on the Optimist course were able to get in four races, even with multiple general recalls. With smaller fleets and an older group of sailors, 6 races were run for each fleet on the …

Flying Scots Get Slammed at Marblehead 2006 North American Championships:  Late Tuesday afternoon of what was to be a week long regatta, Mother Nature threw a major hissy-fit,  in the form of a micro-burst tornado, at host Corinthian Yacht Club and Marblehead (Massachusetts) Harbor.   Boats were flipped, rigs mangled, and docks tortured.  As far as the Rappahannock River area contingent, damages ran the gambit from "not too bad"  to  "a total mess".  Luckily  the communication from the shore support people to the RC folks on the water was excellent and when the damaging cell (a micro-burst tornado)  popped up on the weather radar, the racers were sent / towed in.  All the boats were …

You've all seen the website news about the microburst tornado we experienced at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA on Tuesday afternoon. Here are a few photos of the scene before and after.

Marblehead Before

Before - was taken on Saturday afternoon. You can see that CYC is the picture of order. The first 9 Flying Scots launched were assigned spots at the dock. The remaining 55 were assigned moorings in the harbor. We felt so "special" to be at the dock along with several members of the Board of Governors.

Marblehead After

After - shows how the docks looked not long after the storm. Boat number 10 is our "3Sixty5". Yes, that's her mast bent like an "L" across the dinghy rack …
