Webmasters are critical to events in
these days and times. We have a lot of good ones in the sailing
community and certainly on the southern Bay. Folks who give
their time and genius to special racing events on the southern Bay
certainly come to mind - most recently, Jon Deutsch (2010 Opti
National Championship Regatta), and Buddy DeRyder (Southern Bay
Race Week for the Black Seal Cup). It's a tough job requiring talent,
time, skill, patience, and judgment.
Fishing Bay Yacht Club is hosting their 71st Annual

expected include: 420, Albacore, Hampton, Flying Scot, Front Runner, Laser,
Laser Radial, Mobjack, and Optimist. The FBYC-ers …

Jere Dennison noticed that Rives Potts and Carina were featured on page 16 of the August 2010 edition of Sailing magazine. I have scanned the article and the full page picture - Carina is sail number USA 315 - and it is available as a download of a 2MB pdf here.
SOME OF THE 50+ COACH BOATS RAFTED AT DELTAVILLE MARITIME MUSEUM DOCK!
They did a great job. Both the Screwpile and the
Opti Nationals organizing committees may have some valuable advice on
controlling chaos and managing mayhem that would be useful all over the
place - the Gulf, Afghanistan, even the Macy's back-to-school
sale!!
Another great SCREWPILE REGATTA:
MERIDIAN and MIDNIGHT MISTRESS
win their fleets. The 16th Chesapeake Bay classic event came
off as planned - racers raced, rum flowed, and trophies are now happily
displayed in conspicuous places. LG Raley and his band of relentless
volunteers have done it again. One hundred and twenty (120)boats entered
the 2010 Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge Regatta …
July 24, 2010 (Deltaville, VA) Since July 17, some of Americas best junior sailors, and several international sailors, have gathered in Deltaville to compete for the title of National Champion. Fishing Bay Yacht Club has been the host yacht club for the 315 sailors, their coaches, and their families. The championship regatta included Team Race Nationals, Girls Nationals, and Open Fleet Nationals. The event has been quite successful, with only a few postponements due to light air. It has been a great opportunity for young sailors to challenge themselves by competing against the very best. Open Fleet Nationals also gave new competitors some valuable experience by setting up a separate course, complete with experienced coaches, for the Green Fleet …
Today the 2010 Layline Nationals Girls Championship held 3 races over the trapezoid course in the mouth of the Piankitank River in light air, and the FBYC girls did great!!
Erin Jocobs got 13th overall, 5th in the blue fleet; Kendall Swenson got 21st overall, 14th in the red fleet; and Claire Lennarz got 40th overall, Hannah Steadman 43rd; all out of 80 boats.
Trophies were scheduled to be awarded by Olympic Gold Medalist Anna Tunnicliffe - pictured at left, but the girls had to settle for autographs, as trophies aren't being given out until the results are final.
The USODA Team Race Nationals got off to another early start on day 3. Racing began at 0930 to take advantage of the predicted winds and to give the sailors the best chance of getting in the entire round before our cut off time in the afternoon.
The wind was out of the south, south-west at 13-18 knots. It was mostly cloudy in the morning and clearing around noon. A few rain clouds passed through the race course, but never dumped a significant amount of rain.
Following the 2nd round, the teams were re-grouped into Gold and Silver divisions with the top teams put into the gold division and the bottom half in the silver. The teams in the Alpha …
Sailing on Sunday at the 2010 USODA Layline Team Race Nationals started early with a 0930 first warning to take advantage of the morning wind. The wind began out of the west, south-west at 8-10 knots. Since only 24 races were completed yesterday for the first round of the round robin, we had to get in 12 more races to complete the round before going on to round 2.
The Team of Lauderdale Yacht Club (#4) was the top-ranked team coming out of the first round. They were followed by the LISOT Black Team, LISOT Blue Team, and Team FOR A. Those four teams made up the top group going into round two and the rest of the teams were …
Throughout the week this webcam located just across the Jackson Creek North Fork from Deltaville Boatyard will be showing live views of either the entrance channel to Jackson Creek or the Launch area at Deltaville Boatyard. When pointed at the entrance to Jackson Creek the sailing area is just to the right, partially out of the screen.
And be sure to check out the webcam in the morning for some great sunrise shots. Thanks to Bob Walker for setting this up!
US Sailing has announced that FBYC Member and Bermuda Race winner Rives Potts is Sailor of the Week. Their announcement follows:
With a victory margin of over three and half hours, Rives Potts sailed Carina, a 48-foot sloop, to victory at last months Newport Bermuda Race. Fifteen years ago Rives bought Carina, built in 1969, and has competed in the Newport Bermuda Races with her since 2000. During this stretch, Carina has won her individual class four times and the race once.
After winning the St. Davids Lighthouse Division, Rives attributes his success to a good boat, good crew and good lucky. In addition, Rives had a distinct plan when he set out for the race. After the …
This past week, twenty-one area youth participated in the Middlesex Family YMCAs junior sailing camp hosted by the members of the Fishing Bay Yacht Club in Deltaville. Throughout the week-long camp, participants balanced instructional sessions with practicums on the water. Junior sailors developed a myriad of skill sets that included rigging and derigging of sail boats, windward and leeward sailing, trimming the sails, and recovering from capsized boats.
The highlight of the week involved FBYC members Ted Bennett, Alex Alvis, and Ric Bauer escorting the junior sailors to the edge of the Chesapeake Bay on their 40-50 foot length yachts. While enjoying lunch, the children learned the similarities and differences between yachts & the smaller craft being utilized at …
LEUKEMIA CUP RESULTS: At the 12th
Annual Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta folks did their share in
contributions through entry fees for a special and significant event.
Plans were to race Saturday and Sunday, but, as so often happens, Mother nature
had a lot to say about that. There was a dearth of wind both days (other
than during the super thunder boomer on Saturday) in the Chesapeake
off Stingray Point. Sometimes, it just goes that way. On Saturday,
one very short race was completed on the Classic and Cruising Fleets
course. On Sunday, the same folks managed two more short races for a 3
race series. On the PHRF and One-Design Course, it …
At the Gala dinner at Stingray Point Marina on Saturday, Leukemia Cup Regatta Co-Chairs Judy Buis and Carolyn Schmalenberger announced that Rob Whittet and Wavelength was the top fund-raising boat! He has raised 89% on his web site, but with late donations at the event and Friday night auction, his total was over $11,000.
Congratulations to Rob, seen pictured in the back row in sunglasses and a blue shirt.
