Results for the joint Mosquito Point Regatta with RRYC

Allan Heyward on

Offshore Racing
Fishing Bay's first foray into a joint event with the River clubs seems to have gone well and been well-received. 16 boats competed, 11 from FBYC and 5 from the river: a good turnout considering what conditions looked like early Saturday morning. The attached file is a Word 97 document with the overall results. If you wish me to fax you the long version, give me a call at 804-747-4500 or email me with your fax number. Ties were resolved pursuant to RRS App A, Rule A8 (in most cases A8.3).

In due course the results, as regards the FBYC Spring Series, will be integrated into the series scoring.

April 13, 2002 by Rt. Rev. F. Clayton Matthews

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. On the third day of creation, you divided the waters from the land, and in the fullness of time came the ancestral waters of the Chesapeake Bay, the Piankatank River, Fishing Bay, and Jackson Creek. Bodies of water upon which we recreate and through which we sail. We present here from these four bodies of water. We ask you to sanctify this water by your creative power so that it may be a sign of the desire we have for you to …

Spectators Welcome at J/29 Invitational Regatta

    Case Whittemore on

    Social Events
The sixth annual FBYC J/29 Invitational Regatta will be held on Friday-Sunday, April 19-21. This regatta continues to attract the best J/29 sailors on the east coast. This year at least 15 boats are expected, including a boat from Ontario, Canada. The quality of racing and competition at this regatta is extraordinary. It is a great opportunity for the Club’s hard-core racers, would-be racers and cruisers to come out and see some exciting competition. Seeing four J/29s keeping their spinnakers up to the last instant and then rounding the leeward mark four-wide is exciting both for the competitors and the spectators. And of course the starts are always full of action. There will be 3 or …

varegatta In the depths of World War II, the major efforts of all members of the fledgling Urbanna Yacht Club (predecessor to FBYC for those who didn’t read last month’s column) were directed toward winning the War. However, the burgee continued to fly, and UYC did not cease operations as so many other clubs were forced to do. uycpatrol Nevertheless, racing activity on the Chesapeake Bay was severely curtailed due to the many skippers and crews on military leave and due to travel constraints dictated by gas rationing.

Four Fishing Bay J/29s Compete at 2002 Key West Race Week

    Case Whittemore on

    Social Events
The weather at Key West Race Week is always the story and this year was no exception. The first and fifth days were better suited for sunbathing—no wind and no races. Of course sunbathing is not bad in January. The second and fourth days had good tactical racing in light air. The middle day had medium to strong wind that resulted in a chop that was as challenging as any on the Chesapeake. Three Long Island J/29s, Hustler (Tony and John Esposito), Tomahawk (Bruce Lockwood) and Showdown (Bijan Risadi), swept the top places at KWRC. The four Fishing Bay boats made a good showing in the middle of the 17-boat fleet. Patriot (Case Whittemore) was 5th, Killshot (Bob …

    The Schooner Nighthawk

    History
Our club began life, not as the Fishing Bay Yacht Club, but as the Urbanna Sailing Association in 1939 nighthawk under the loom of imminent hostilities in Europe and Asia. Within a year, the Association incorporated as the Urbanna Yacht Club. The club had an enrollment of 35 sailing yachts and 63 members, had rented quarters in Urbanna, and had joined the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association. Within three years, an active racing program was severely curtailed by the outbreak of World War II, and many of our members joined the armed services, representing practically every branch of America’s fighting forces. Pictured here is the schooner “Nighthawk” shown on race committee duty for the cruising division during UYC’s Virginia …

    History of FBYC

    Jere Dennison on

    History
Having been enticed by our persuasive Commodore Scott to contribute a series of history columns to the Log about the formative years of FBYC, I will cheerfully comply. As a clubmember since 1955, I suppose my credentials at least partially (but not uniquely) qualify me to undertake this task. However, major credit must be given to MacDonald Wellford, a founding member and early club historian, who fanatically maintained scrapbooks on club history from its inception in 1939 until the late 1960’s. Mac kindly loaned these scrapbooks to me before his death, and these will be source for much of the material dealing with the early years of the club’s existence. Second credit must go to the Richmond Times-Dispatch …

Please save the date and plan to attend this once in a lifetime event.

And the next start will not necessarily follow in 5 minutes. It will take some study - both for our fleets and our skippers - to learn the new system …
