Michael and wife Amy are both licensed USCG captains with over 30,000 offshore miles each. They have made two transatlantic crossings, outfitted several boats of their own for offshore cruising and have supervised/ consulted for many others. They currently live aboard a 42 cutter hailing out of Norfolk, VA.

Andrew L. Turner, Jr., 90, better known to club members as Andy, passed away on December 16, 2009 holding the hand of his wife of almost 67 years and surrounded by the six children he raised and loved. He is survived by his beloved wife, Evelyn Turner; his daughters, Sydney Turner of Boston, MA, Leslie Babcock of Roanoke, VA, and Courtney Turner of Arlington, VA and Ankara, Turkey; his sons, Andrew Turner III of Raleigh, NC, Marion Roberts Morrissett of Richmond, VA, and Michael Turner Morrissett of Roanoke, VA; and his 10 grandchildren.

Raymond E. Toms, Jr., age 85, died at his home in Deltaville, VA from injuries suffered in an auto accident on December 7. Ray is survived by his wife of 63 years, Pat Toms; his three daughters, Sara Spoerri of Capitan, NM, Anne Richardson of Norfolk and Kenney Cobb of Richmond; two sons, Lewis of Charlotte, NC, and Michael of Charlottesville; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Fishing Bay Yacht Club has launched a state-of-the art event website http://optinationals2010.org for the Optimist Nationals. The website was built using modern blogging software and has many features for participants, parents and fans to get information about the event and to follow along as it happens. On Saturday, November 21, at 0900, well need as many volunteers as possible to spruce up FBYCs grounds. Well be raking leaves and various other tasks so please bring your rakes and shovels. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided at the main clubhouse at 0830 to get you started. With sufficient help, we should finish around lunchtime, at which time there will be pizza and beverages.

With over 48 hours so far of high winds and as of Friday morning with 4 ½ft of water above normal high tide the Yacht Club has survived with only minor dock damage, i.e. boards missing, dock light submerged. The worst damage was to the east pier east out board pilings 4th in from the outside transient piling (Waddy and Teds) Piling snapped off after Waddys port bow line parted and was forced to take the impact of several thousand lbs all at once, with Waddys and Teds boats vying for position of slip dominance some paint was traded and just make sure that the two boats decided that Invictus should get some abuse just …
Dabney Overton III, age 46, died on November 9, 2009, in Richmond, VA. He is survived by his sister, Hannah Overton, and nieces, Emma and Lizzie Schmidt, all of Tappahannock; a half-sister, Mallory Overton McKendry, of Jacksonville, FL; and his father, Dabney Overton Jr., of Harrisonburg. Dabney was a graduate of Aylett Country Day School and St. Christophers School. He graduated from Washington & Lee University in 1986.

Twenty Five Lasers battled some windy conditions at the 2009 Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Championship. 4 races were sailed Saturday in 13-18. Saturday night all of the sailor's were treated to Alain Vincey's world famous Laser Masters dinner. Sunday, the sailors got in 2 races in 17 knots with gusts to 25.
John Bertrand (Annapolis Yacht Club) won all 6 races to finish 1st overall and 1st Master. Peter Seidenberg (Sail Newport) was 2 points behind and first Great Grand Master. FBYC in conjunction with Deltaville Boatyard, Deltaville Marina, Deltaville Maritime Museum, The Harbor House and Jackson Creek Condo association will host USODA Nationals July 17-25th. USODA notified FBYC Friday October 16th that their application and proposal has been accepted. With help from key members from the Deltaville Community FBYC submitted a detailed proposal that has been enthusiastically accepted by the community, the FBYC Board, USODA, and over 60 volunteers!
