One Design Racing
Are you interested in the satisfaction of a job well done, working as part of a team, playing an important role in an exciting event, spending quality time on the Bay, making new friends and fulfilling a portion of your FBYC volunteer obligation? If your answer to one or more of these questions is “yes”, then you should consider joining the Race Committee Team this year. You may have thought about volunteering in the past but thought you lacked experience. In reality, little experience is necessary. Bermuda high boosts spirits

George Burke on

Social Events
bermuda high party 027 If the purpose of the annual FBYC Bermuda high party is to boost the spirits of our winter-bound sailors, this year's version provided that boost and more. Hosted by Nica and Jeremy Waters, and held at the home of Lyons and George Burke, the 2011 Bermuda high party delivered a unique party atmosphere amid the glow of tropical print table arrangements, one of a kind photography from the Waters' year in the Bahamas, and signature drinks and food (think Margaritas, PainKillers and more), with the music of the islands in the background. 60 members and guests attended, and they all left cured of the winter doldrums. We're sorry if you missed it. Come next year!

History
Mark WensellWhen we started the new Fishing Bay Yacht Club web site around 2001, Mark Wensell, a FBYC member had just founded bayMountain, a new data center in Richmond. Mark offered to help us out by hosting the site and also did the initial set up of the computer, the software, and the database that even today still runs the site.

His company's recent growth was highlighted in a recent article in the Richmond Times Dispatch. See http://www2.timesdispatch.com/business/2011/feb/15/tdbiz01-peak-10-expands-data-center-in-henrico-ar-843293/

New PHRF Rating

Mayo Tabb on

Offshore Racing
PHRF last fall adapted a new dual rating system where a boat can have a different Spin and Non-spin (NS) rating. The wording of the rule change was very clear for boats that requested a non-spinnaker rating or provided no spinnaker data that they would be eligible only to race in Non-spin classes. For boats providing spinnaker data and requesting both Sin and Non-spin ratings they would receive two ratings and could compete in Spin classes with the Spin rating and in Non-spin classes with the Non-spin rating. Unfortunately the rule change was silent concerning could a boat with a only a Spin rating compete in a Non-spin class at that rating and simply not use her spinnaker as has …

What in Tarnation is a Geezer Regatta?

Jere Dennison on

One Design Racing
old sailors.jpeg As the boomer generation transitions into its golden years, one cannot deny the competitive cravings of many of our silver-haired FBYC members over age 60. Sure, there are plenty of regattas limited to “classic” yachts but none tailored specifically for “classy” seniors. Of course the Lasers have their Masters regattas, but…get this... you only have to be 35 and up to qualify. Haw-dee-haw. Now FBYC is sponsoring a new regatta in 2011 for truly genuine masters with all those cocky young sea-lions excluded. Isn’t it about time those young-uns got their comeuppance?!

My old friend Perry Guy (a veteran Penquin and Laser skipper) and I thought it would be fun to introduce a new racing event open only …

Novelty Windward Mark Breaks Free in Nantucket

Some may remember an earlier account of Sophie and Mike Massie and me, racing his Rhodes 19 in Nantucket Race Week, including our mishap of misreading the “novelty course” with its windward mark being the notorious boat “Miss China” tied to a public mooring in swift current in the center of the harbor.
