High water and impassible roads couldn’t keep the Laser Masters from sailing this weekend. Extremely high tides due to a harvest moon and a Nor’easter off the coast made Fishing Bay Road nearly impassible in 6-8+ inches of water at times. The road and Fishing Bay dock were still underwater at some of the low tides over the weekend.
On Saturday everyone arrived plenty early ahead of the mid-morning high tide and rigged and waited for the right wind. After a 2-hour postponement the wind filled in and 36 boats filed out to get in some races in the afternoon.
The wind filled in out of the SSE for 3 races with the first being won by Gavin …

Those that aren’t tuning up in Marblehead will be sailing on Saturday in the Laser Fall Regatta at FBYC …

We are club-wide proud of Glenn Doncaster and his Nanuq crew for representing FBYC at the 2019 US Offshore Keelboat Championship in Annapolis this past weekend. Glenn and his crew,--Matt Newborn, Alex Seamus O'Toole, Sloan Burns, Jim Cobb, Commodore Paul Wash, Jerry Latell and their midshipman, Grace, took third place.
The 3-days of fleet racing, consisting of long-distance and buoy races in Navy 44's, attracted stellar competitors from throughout the nation. Each of the 11 US Sailing districts sent a crew with our guys besting some prestigious organizations like Chicago's Corinthian YC and California's St. Francis YC. The Naval Academy also campaigned a boat (they won) and provided a cadet to serve as crew on the other contenders.

Some FBYC sailors, eager to attend Preview Day at the 50th Annapolis Boat Show, will be meeting to drive up to Annapolis on Thursday, October 10, 2019. We're parking our cars and gathering at:
Barnes & Noble parking lot
9850 Brook Road
Glen Allen, VA
7 AM SHARP!
We plan to arrive when the show opens and will return sometime before 10 PM. It's a long, fun-filled day where we can shop, learn and dream together. Members of FBYC's cruising fleet will be sailing up so hopefully we can all grab a Painkiller at Pussers together and share some interesting finds.
This is a casual rendezvous to share drive time and costs. So just show up if you're interested in …
We were honored to be invited and excited to send some sailors to the Annapolis Yacht Club's 3-2-1 Invitational last weekend. The 3-2-1 was a combination match/team race event where teams of six sailors raced J22's and J30's in a very competitive round robin format. Match or team racing events will soon become a reality at FBYC with our own fleet of Flying Scots...but we could use a few more. (So if you have a rarely-sailed FS you'd like to donate, please let us know.)
In the meantime, thanks to Austin Powers, Mike Toms, Ben Buhl, Parker Garrett, Blake Kimbrough et al for representing us up north.

It's hard to believe but FBYC's two season-capping events are just around the corner.
Mark your calendars for our Closing Day Regatta & Oyster Roast on November 2, 2019. This event is always fun-filled, whether you're pursuit racing 'round the marks or just coming to slurp, shuck or dress up local oysters to your liking.
Then, get ready to rock on November 16, 2019 for the Annual Meeting and Commodore's Ball. We're "mixing up the race course" with a new location at the Hippodrome Theater. Located in Richmond's Jackson Ward, the Hippodrome promises excitement and history, not to mention great food and music.
Register now on-line for both events. The season's never really over now is it!
