The Volvos are coming! Southern Bay racer Christian Schaumloffel (Mirage, Hobie 33) has devised a way to estimate their arrival time (at the Virginia Capes and further up the Bay) and has Volvo and NOAA sites he recommends using for your calculations - you can check out the info with Christian by calling him at (757) 496-3590. Christian estimates that the first two boats will have passed through The Capes close to the wee hours this morning, with others hot on their heels later today and early Tuesday morning. If there is any breeze, you better have a really hot sport fisher to keep up with these babies!
Today's posting on SBRNYCU prompts some thoughts. The babies as Lyn McCarthy …

Eight skippers helped get the off-shore racing program off to an early start
this past weekend. The forecast for Saturday afternoon was not encouraging
so seven boats went out at 10 am with a mix of regular crew and 14 crew
training candidates. With more boats available than crew Schiehallion
volunteered to distribute her skipper and crew between the other 7 boats.
Rain started to settle in after a little over 90 minutes and all the boats returned
for lunch at 12.30 courtesy of the Dennison's, Jere and Clark.
Three boats went
out again after lunch for a wet and windier ride. Sunday's forecast was for improving
conditions after noon, with the temperature moving out of the …

On Saturday April 1st, eager FBYC gardeners arrived with rakes and clippers in hand to clean, clear, carry, clip and cultivate, all for the sake of beautifying our grounds for Opening Day. Chip Hall's call for participation was a success, mustering almost fifty volunteers, all ready to do their part toward the minimum goal of two days of annual service to the club. Warmth and pleasant breezes cooperated to create a splendid day.
By sunset, weary gardeners were rewarded with wine, appetizers and a hearty meal at the Welcome Cruisers party. The Cruising Division program included a brief discussion of strategies to improve the Division's relevance to small boat cruisers and families with children as well as ringside …
On-the water Crew Training starts this coming Saturday and a list of registrants can be seen on the home page of the FBYC web site. We are expecting at least 6 boats to be out on Saurday with over 25 candidates aboard. Not all participants have registered on line so the turnout will almost certainly be higher than the number you see listed as registered.
A notice that was sent out to all candidates follows in the main body of this posting. For anyone who wants to see the list of registrants on the new Crew Finder list directions are shown in the notice. It's early days for this new list and much of the information was taken directly …

VOR: CHESAPEAKE CHALLENGES
Leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean Race brings many challenges. Skippers and
navigators must negotiate the southeast and northeast tradewinds, cross
through the dreaded doldrums and Bermuda Triangle then play the strong
currents of the Gulf Stream. There are many decisions to be made during the
5,000-nautical mile leg from Rio de Janeiro to Baltimore, but it's the
final 120 miles that concern skippers and navigators the most. "There could
be some serious reshuffling in the Chesapeake Bay," Pirates of the
Caribbean skipper Paul Cayard said yesterday. "Anything can happen in the
Bay, and that's good …

The Laser had it's 35th birthday recently and the Winter issue of the class magazine is loaded with happy memories of it's early days and reports on antics that famous names like Carl Buchan and Gary Jobsonwere involved in. Current hull numbers are in the mid 180,000 range and both the full and the radial rigs will be seen in the Beijing Oplympics. While most of the medalists in the mens event in recent years have been from outside the US there are two US women in contention for the US Olympic team, Paige Railey and Anna Tunniclife. Paige is in High School in Florida while Anna sailed out of Old Dominion University so she may be …
Mark your calendar! On April 1st at 9:00 am, we will have our Spring Clean-Up of the grounds. Some parts of the grounds are in turmoil from construction of the bulkhead on Jacksons Creek and ground clearing. The new land is slowly taking shape, but we really need to get some grass growing in lots of places. In spite of these circumstances, we have lots to do. Mulch spreading, pruning, the usual dose of raking and other spruce-up kinds of jobs are on the agenda. Well have coffee and maybe a doughnut or two to get you started. If enough hands show up, well be done by lunch. Bring a rake, pruning shears, some trash bags …
A number of FBYC boats went to
St. Petersburg Yacht Club for the Flying Scot Midwinters being held March 5-10. A close look at the
Results shows that John Hubbard is in the top half of the 35 boat Championship Fleet. I heard Friday night that his crew included our Rear Commodore Ric Bauer and Sharon. Noel Clinard is also competing in the Championship Fleet.
Mike Massie and daughter Sophie - on a break from UVa - is a consistent 11 in the Challenger Fleet.
In the spring of 1607 the first English settlers arrived in Jamestown with three large vessels and a knocked down and disassembled boat. This 30 barge was completed on the shore and immediately put in service exploring the myriad tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay. In the course of this exploration and mapping, Capt. John Smith was fatally stung by a Stingray off present day Stingray Point. Quick work by the ships surgeon (not Pocahontas, sorry Walt) saved his life.
To commemorate our first unhappy tourist the Deltaville Maritime Museum will construct what we believe is an authentic replica of Captain John Smiths Explorer.
This 30 open boat, propelled by oars and sail will be constructed with white oak …
